UNITED NATIONS, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Senior officials from five
permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany failed to
reach consensus Monday on the long-term strategy on Iran nuclear issue.
After almost four and a half hours of talks which were held at
British mission, the six countries did not achieve any agreement
on the issue, diplomats who participated in the consultation told Xinhua.
Officials who attended the meeting include U.S. Under Secretary
of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns, Russia's Deputy Foreign
Minister Sergei Kislyak, Chinese Foreign Ministry Director of Arms
Control Zhang Yan, and Foreign Ministry Political Director John Sawers
of Britain, Stanislas de la Boulaye of France and Michael Schaefer of
Germany.

This is scary stuff. Iran could have fuel for nuclear weapons
within the decade. Or not. But we fear for Israel so let's pump up
the fear cycle. Never mind that North Korea is building MORE nuclear
weapons. They have no oil and don't threaten Israel. We have become
the Middle East Police!

Both North Korea AND Iran should be stopped from developing nuclear weapons.
What possible purpose can either N. Korea or Iran have for wanting nuclear
weapons? Does N. Korea need to defend itself against S. Korea? They'll never
have a chance at defending themselves against China, no matter what they do.
Does Iran need to defend itself against Iraq? Turkey? Israel (who has only
attacked them once- to eradicate a nuclear power plant)? Who else is their
perceived threat? THEY are the destabilizing force in the area.
But that begs the issue of why some of you have to incessantly throw Israel
into the equation. Oft times it seems that if someone posted about
eradicating mice from the planet, you would feel compelled to mention Israel
in some way.
Israel may or may not have nuclear weapons. It's interesting that no one
seems to know with 100% certainty. And why is that? Because you have never,
not once, heard them "sabre-rattle". Israel has never talked about nuclear
weaponry and has never threatened the use of it against any nations. All
talk of Israel's nuclear weaponry has been speculative solely on the part of
people like yourselves. There is not even evidence, to the best of my
knowledge, of nuclear testing in Israel. The more you say it, though, the
more it must be true, and the more people grow up taking it for granted that
it is. The fact that Israel itself doesn't talk of it demonstrates a high
level of responsibility on their part if they do have nuclear capability.
Iran and N. Korea, along with Pakistan and India, have openly threatened
regarding their nuclear weapons programs on more than one occasion. That
need to "threaten" alone demonstrates them to be irresponsible keepers of
the nuclear technology. While the current leadership of Pakistan and India
appear to be more rational and moderate, the leadership of Iran and N. Korea
are neither. They are repressive, militaristic, and otherwise irrational
people. Particularly the Iranian leadership.
You should be in favor of preventing nuclear proliferation in any case, for
your children's sake if not for your own. Period. Israel has nothing to do
with that. If they have nuclear weapons, they have them. Why does that make
it OK for other countries to develop them? How does that help global
stability? The reason behind the fact that you feel compelled to toss Israel
into the fray needs to be looked at with more scrutiny. I suspect other
motives.
