Iran seizes British navy boats

Tehran - Iran has seized three British navy vessels that entered its
territorial waters near the Iraqi border, arresting eight British
sailors, Iran's Arabic-language satellite news channel Al-Alam
reported on Monday.
"The Iranian navy has confiscated three British boats that entered
Iranian territorial waters ... arresting the crew of eight people. On
the boats they found weapons and maps," the station reported, quoting
Iranian naval sources.
The report said the arrests were made on the Shatt al-Arab waterway
that flows into the Gulf, and which is the boundary between Iran and
Iraq.

I'm starting to get disappointed here: it's been more than 24 hours,
Iran saying they intend to prosecute the crew, and I still don't see
Britain demanding that the crew and boats be safely returned
immediately, or else....

If the UK had no regard for civilian casualties, they would pulverize
Iran into submission. Presently they have their hands tied behind
their backs with impossibly high standards of avoiding civilian
casualties.

There's hardly anything Iran can do to supply the insurgents with more
than they already do. The decision has already been made to go after
Iraq first. Perhaps it would have been better to take out Iran, even
more now so that they are flaunting their disregard for the IAEA. Even
being bogged down in Iraq, the US and UK could inflict enough damage
that the millions of disenchanted Iranian citizens will overthrow
their government.

We'll have to leave this at least initially to the UK to resolve. As
far as the USA goes, we have been far too goddamned gentle and mooshy
toward the scumbag Iranian government. One explanation I've read is
that the Bush people are avoiding confronting scumbag governments in
Iran and Syria because they don't want to lose any vote this November
by attacking any other nations. This is woefully short-sighted. Iran
is exploiting deliberate Coalition weakness as well as interfering in
Iraq for geopolitical and support-of-fundamentalism-and-terrorism
reasons. Why are the mullahs still in power in Iran, or even alive?

Yup, Iran seemed a more likely target than Iraq, and Syria's nasty
involvements with terrorism are the stuff of legend. But, we knocked
over Afghanistan and then Iraq, which has isolated both Syria and
Iran. They must be feeling the pinch. My guess is, our next stop is
Damascus. They are flooding Iraq with men and material and are really
already at war with us there. Iran will always be waiting their turn
with fixed bayonets, at once the biggest challenge the and the fattest
plum. It could be that Bush's gamble on "democracy" in Iraq may work
and we will be spared further war in the region. It's a slim hope,
but not altogether completely untenable.
