Iraqi anger rises over US 'friendly-fire' killings
Hundreds of angry Iraqis have gathered to bury the 10 policemen and
security guards shot dead by American troops in a "friendly-fire"
attack.
Crowds chanted "America is the enemy of God" as police in Falluja were
forced to fire their guns into the air to disperse demonstrators.
Sunni Muslim clerics in the town, 30 miles west of Baghdad, condemned
the attack, announced three days of mourning and called a general
strike for tomorrow.
The protests came after the US military command issued a statement
apologising for yesterday's attack and sending "condolences to the
families of the deceased".
It admitted that its soldiers had caused "at least one death" when
they opened fire on a convoy of Iraqi police vehicles chasing an
unmarked car being driven by suspected robbers.
A Jordanian-run hospital was pounded with machinegun fire during the
attack which witnesses said lasted for up to 45 minutes.
At least eight policemen died in the fighting and Iraqi officials said
another two had died overnight from their injuries.
