Is there a religious cabal in the cabinet? |
The London Evening Standard Diary yesterday 17 Jan ran a piece on the
new education secretary Ruth Kelly's member ship of the extreme Catholic
organisation Opus Dei. It was a product of Franco's Spain.
Membership of Opus Dei is by invitation only and the organisation is
unashamedly elitist. members engage in self flagellation and other
practices such as wearing a spiked chain called a "cilice" to mortify
the flesh.
The ES claimed that backbench MPs were unhappy with her appointment
because of the Opus Dei membership , not least because of what they see
as its fascist roots.
More immediately pressing is the question of whether Blair is developing
a religious cabal within the cabinet. If he is, the cabinet will be
utterly at variance with the general public which displays very little
active religious belief. RH

you will be gratified to know the founder was recently sainted
(founded 1928)....so talking of it being a product of franco's spain
or of 'fascist roots' is inaccurate....
like so many hatstands you are probably confusing socialist fascism
with catholic (francoist) falangism....opus dei was a section of
franco's alliance in the latter part of his rule

Religious leaders have been given special access to the cabinet.
Blair and his clique dwell on right over wrong and practice the
opposite in true religious nutter style.
Sexual and social morality/control have been at the forefront of their

I doubt it. Remember, we're dealing with politicians here.
There might be religious poseurs in the cabinet, but they are 100 percent
there for what they can get out of it, not what they can do for God.

The general public also displays very little political activism so that,
presumably, makes any cabinet utterly at variance with the general
public. What influence do you say this cabal exerts? It's not enough
to say that religious interest groups have special access to government,
I think, since so do farmers, road hauliers and all manner of people
who've got a particular axe to grind.

This is all the rage now, as almost these exact words appear in the
opening chapters of the best seller 'The Davinci Code'.
