'Islam will invade Europe and America'
Muslim leader declares faith in ultimate triumph, collapse of U.S.
Responding to France's ban on the Islamic veil, the new head of the
Muslim Brotherhood asserted Islam ultimately will triumph over the
United States and Europe.
"I have complete faith that Islam will invade Europe and America,
because Islam has logic and a mission," said Muhammad Mahdi Othman
'Akef, who recently took over the Egyptian-based movement after the
death of leader Mamoun Al-Hudhaybi.
In an interview with the website alwihdah.com, translated by the
Middle East Media Research Institute, 'Akef said he is convinced "the
Europeans and the Americans will come into the bosom of Islam out of
conviction."
"In 1993, I went to America and I published a book, 'Political
Pluralism and the Woman,' that was distributed in the mosque," he
said. "Thirty [American] women converted immediately to Islam as soon
as they read it. These are people who become convinced of the right
path – but who will guide them there?"
Founded in 1928, the Muslim Brotherhood has been banned in Egypt since
1954, although it renounced violence in the 1970s. The movement, which
has thousands of supporters and branches in other Arab nations, seeks
to establish a strict Islamic state in Egypt.
'Akef said he was among the first to express opposition to statements
by French President Jacques Chirac, who "described the hijab [veil] as
offensive in nature."
A bill presented to France's National Assembly yesterday by Prime
Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin bars Muslim headscarves, Jewish
skullcaps and large Christian crosses from public classrooms.
'Akef said he asked Chirac to understand the hijab is a "divine
commandment."
"I know that among the brothers in France, or the so-called Union of
Islamic Organizations, there are smart people who can stand against
this vile stream in the war on the hijab, represented by the stream of
Turkey and Tunisia," he said. "With Allah's help, our brothers in
France will be able to handle this matter however they see fit."
In an interview with the Egyptian weekly Al-Arabi, 'Akef called the
U.S. a "Satan that abuses the region, lacking all morality and law."
'Akef criticized Washington's claims that the U.S. is acting to spread
democracy in the Arab world.
"These are [futile] words and false propaganda," he said. "It is not
logical that the U.S. – which destroyed Afghanistan, supports
Israel's daily ongoing aggression against the Palestinian people and
occupies Iraq and steals its treasures – is acting to spread
democracy in the Arab world."
The Muslim leader said he expects the U.S. to collapse in the near
future.
He told the independent Egyptian weekly Nahdhat Misr, "The matter of
America's attempt to take over the world is not new. What is new is
that it appears with such a grim face, without morals, without
principles, without law and without recognition of the need for the
U.N. or the Security Council.
'Akef said he is certain that "without the betrayal in Iraq, the
Iraqis would have tormented the Americans with all kinds of torments,"
and U.S. forces would have left.
"I expect America to collapse soon," he said. "The elements of this

Think about it. If Israel disappeared tomorrow, would Palestinian
society be improved, even by the slightest amount?
Why do Palestinians complain about the so-called peace wall? Because
they have to use the checkpoints. Why do they use the checkpoints? In
most cases, because they are going to work ... in Israel.
Without Israel, most of the 25% of Palestinians left in employment
because of the terrorist attacks would be out of work. They would be
*worse* off, not better. And they would be completely dominated by the
Islamists of Hamas.
And if the democratic world disappeared completely, the Islamists
would completely dominate, and all Muslims would be forced back into a
medieval agrarian patriarchal society - the state of largely bedouin
Arabian society when Islam first appeared.
See, the desire for freedom felt by Muslims will never be assuaged by
the west because it isn't the west that imprisons them; it is Islam
itself. You will only be free when you reject the religious identity
imposed on you by others, and you will only feel contentment as a
Muslim if you return to it entirely by free choice. This is part of
the meaning of 'enlightenment'.
But I doubt you know what I'm talking about.

Exactly. Yet somehow the Baptists have failed to do the same thing in
America, so I doubt Islam (esentially the same mindset) will manage to
make huge inroads. Aside from war apologists, I haven't noticed a
significant number people converting here in America.
Also, other religious groups in the U.S. know how to ADVERTISE, even
the whackier ones! Unless you're hearing about it from some converted
sports figure or from the "war", Islam has zero profile in the U.S.
You just don't hear about any Isamic contributions to the community,
period! Sure, there's a few Muslims around, but absolutely the only
time you encounter them is at the mall, or on the news when they're
turned down for a driver's license.
I think if they truly want to make inroads into the U.S., Muslims
should team up with the Ku Klux Klan. After all, the Klan already wear
sheets, most Klan members claim to be religious extremists, and they
have roots in terrorism. You'd think those two groups would get along
famously.

Pauline Christianity was intended to be a compromise between the
'revealed truth' of middle eastern monotheism - God's law, the ways in
which we should all live - and pagan European notions of the division
of authority, in which the gods are capricious and so have no 'law'
for us to follow (so that we make our own laws).
This is why we have a Christian church (now churches), so that
authority over us is divided between the temporal (monarchs, senates,
parliaments - the state) and spiritual (the church). As Christ
supposedly said, 'Render unto Caesar that which is Ceasar's (ie fealty
in this world); render unto God that which is His' (ie fealty in the
world to come).
This means that the authority of the church works on our consciences
(our 'hearts'), as private, individual beings with the free will to
choose the 'right' or 'wrong' path according to scripture and church
doctrine (derived from presumed God's law), and the authority of the
state works on our intellects (our 'heads'), as public, communal
beings with the social obligation to choose the path of best advantage
to the community as a whole, acording to the law of the land (once
monarchical law, now democratic law, always man-made law).
Christianity perceives that man has free will, and therefore perceives
an absolute divide between man in his private life (where his moral
choices are exercised, and eventually judged), and man in his public
life (where free choices may be limited). This isn't necessarily
because of Christ's own teachings, assuming he existed, but probably
because without this division Christianity would have never been
acceptable to Europeans in the first place.
And IMO this is probably the reason Mohammed rejected Christianity,
and devised a new religion 'untainted' by compromise with pagan
European ideas of free will and social obligation. Islam has no
church, and does not explicitly perceive a division between temporal
and spiritual authority. By this interpretation, a Muslim is supposed
to be a Muslim in his private and his public life, and follow 'God's
law' in both. It follows that 'God's law' and the law of the land must
be one and the same. Thus we have shariah law, which is administed by
the state; we find that the concept of national citizenship and
membership of the Islamic 'ummah' (community of believers) are
identical; and we find there is no nation but the Muslim nation. By
this interpretation, Muslim society is incapable of creating democracy
because democracy is the sovereignty of the people and since Muslim
society and the Muslim individuual areindivisible, Muslim society muct
be a theocracy (and its head, the caliph, must be the supreme
political as well as spiritual leader).
Like I said, the Quran doesn't specifically *deny* the division of
temoral and spiritual authority, so it is in fact possible to craete a
democracy out of Islamic society (Turkey, Bangladesh), but it isn't
*easy*, there is always a crisis of legitimacy, and in the middle east
almost all political movements opposed to secular dictatorship are
Islamist.
The USA is unique in the western, democratic world in being so
religious - ironically, perhaps, only predominantly Muslim countries
are more religously observant than the USA (in Europe, China, Japan,
organised religion is dying out). As a result there is a significant
popular demand that the Christian churches, especially the new,
fundamentalist ones, get involved in politics. And they can become
lobby groups for pet policies, like prohibition, foisting
'creationism' and similar rubbish on schoolchildren, or the outlawing
of abortion. But they can't actually weald political power - the USA
can't become a 'Christianist' theocracy - not only because the US
constitution denies it (and that denial is simply a reflection of the
division of authority that obtained in Christian and pre-Christian
Europe for centuries before) but because there are no specific
Christian public laws it could carry out that would make the USA a
true thoecracy in the first place. All the churches could do is
severely ***** everyone off in America. All we non-Americans can do is
urge Americans to get severely ***** with them already.

No, and you won't - you won't in religious America, nor in secular
Europe, nor anywhere else outside the 'Islamic world' (unless they
have it forced on them), because the appeal of Islam depends on
identification with Islamic culture - which isn't particularly
appealing to those of us who didn't experience it as children.
The supposed rationality of Islam (because it perceives Christ as a
prophet instead of a quasi-deity), which is its claim to universality,
is only rational if you accept the 'truth' of Christianity, and of the
Islamic interpretation of the Judao-Christian tradition, in the first
place (Islam couldn't exist without the earlier two religions). Since
we don't (generally) the point of Islam is lost on us - on the face of
it it is as irrational as any other religion; given that it doesn't
'work' (it struggles to produce free societies) it is actually
marginally more irrational.

You're probably right. I don't believe the US population would convert
to Islam in any great numbers, but I do believe many more would than
would in Europe because they already have irrational religious beliefs
in far greater numbers than do Europeans.
The reason Islam wouldn't take off in the US - even with the greatest
PR campaign ever seen - is because US society is far too
individualistic. Islam was invented in a single culture (Arabian) of
many faiths: its purpose was to bind the Arabian tribe into a single
rite of worship, so taht everyone believes the same thing, from the
same book, in the same language, and dresses the same way, eats the
same food and faces the same way, at the same time, when they pray.
This desire for conformity is what drives Islamic fundamentalism, but
because of Islam's public, political profile, it would be anathema to
Americans.
I think if they truly want to make inroads into the U.S., Muslims
should team up with the Ku Klux Klan. After all, the Klan already wear

I was about to type, the one way that Islamic fundamentalism (if not
Islam) could make inroads into US society is if it makes its political
appeal (of equality, anti-racism etc - it doesn't have to be factual)
to racial minorities. That is, if racial conflict grew for any reason,
the Nation of Islam could plausibly take off in a big way among
African-Americans, and maybe spread to Hispanics (who will soon become
the largest 'national' group in the US, in European terms) and Native
Americans etc. If all black and Hispanic Americans converted to the
NoI, the US would be a majority 'Muslim' state (and al-Qaida etc will
have long since worked this out, FWIW), although the NoI is not truly
Islamic because it is racist.
And since the NoI *is* racist it could - and has - make common cause
with the KKK and American Nazi Party. So, if any white Americans are
likley to 'join' the Islamist fundamentalist cause it would be them -
the most racist and *****-dumb there is. In fact, I could see this
happening everywhere - in Britain there is already a notorious
figurte, a white S African ultra-racist, associated with white
supremacists all over the world, who how appears to have converted to
Islam and become an Osama bin Laden supporter. A straw in the wind? Or

I would agree with you ... except 9/11 happened. And Bali. And an
estimated 200 other acts of terrorism, plus a civil war or ten.
The 'loon' I was quoting is the leader of the Muslim League, which has
been around a long time now, and is responsible for a lot of murders
(remember the Egyptian tourist bombings of the 1990s?).
If you've ever seen the film Lawrence of Arabia you'll remember that
some of the scenes took place in Cairo, where the British generals
were based. I think that was true to history, except there were a
group of Islamic radicals - students mostly - trying, off and on, to
get rid of them. They were the Muslim League and they wanted to rid
the Arab people of Turkish domination (in which Britain was helping
them), and then rid themselves of the British (which didn't happen
until after WW2). They were prpared to resort to terrorism though, I
think, rarely did.
It would probably never have occured to them, or any of their fellow
idelogues, to take their fight against the British to London.
Following WW2, when the USA became the number 1 world power, the idea
that any of these groups would take their 'fight' with the 'west' to
Washington and New York, by bombing them, would have seemed laughable.
Now it has happened, and the world has changed. And your 'loon' is the
leader of one of the groups that started it all.

Muslim Brotherhood asserted Islam ultimately will triumph over the
United States and Europe.
"I have complete faith that Islam will invade Europe and America,
because Islam has logic and a mission," said Muhammad Mahdi Othman
'Akef, who recently took over the Egyptian-based movement after the
death of leader Mamoun Al-Hudhaybi.
In an interview with the website alwihdah.com, translated by the
Middle East Media Research Institute, 'Akef said he is convinced "the
Europeans and the Americans will come into the bosom of Islam out of
conviction."
"In 1993, I went to America and I published a book, 'Political
Pluralism and the Woman,' that was distributed in the mosque," he
said. "Thirty [American] women converted immediately to Islam as soon
as they read it. These are people who become convinced of the right
path – but who will guide them there?"
Founded in 1928, the Muslim Brotherhood has been banned in Egypt since
1954, although it renounced violence in the 1970s. The movement, which
has thousands of supporters and branches in other Arab nations, seeks
to establish a strict Islamic state in Egypt.
'Akef said he was among the first to express opposition to statements
by French President Jacques Chirac, who "described the hijab [veil] as
offensive in nature."
A bill presented to France's National Assembly yesterday by Prime
Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin bars Muslim headscarves, Jewish
skullcaps and large Christian crosses from public classrooms.
'Akef said he asked Chirac to understand the hijab is a "divine
commandment."
"I know that among the brothers in France, or the so-called Union of
Islamic Organizations, there are smart people who can stand against
this vile stream in the war on the hijab, represented by the stream of
Turkey and Tunisia," he said. "With Allah's help, our brothers in
France will be able to handle this matter however they see fit."
In an interview with the Egyptian weekly Al-Arabi, 'Akef called the
U.S. a "Satan that abuses the region, lacking all morality and law."
'Akef criticized Washington's claims that the U.S. is acting to spread
democracy in the Arab world.
"These are [futile] words and false propaganda," he said. "It is not
logical that the U.S. – which destroyed Afghanistan, supports
Israel's daily ongoing aggression against the Palestinian people and
occupies Iraq and steals its treasures – is acting to spread
democracy in the Arab world."
The Muslim leader said he expects the U.S. to collapse in the near
future.
He told the independent Egyptian weekly Nahdhat Misr, "The matter of
America's attempt to take over the world is not new. What is new is
that it appears with such a grim face, without morals, without
principles, without law and without recognition of the need for the
U.N. or the Security Council.
'Akef said he is certain that "without the betrayal in Iraq, the
Iraqis would have tormented the Americans with all kinds of torments,"
and U.S. forces would have left.
"I expect America to collapse soon," he said. "The elements of this
collapse in America [already] exist, and Allah is the savior."
