"It's Saigon all over again." |
Party on at Saddam's palace
By Iason Athanasiadis
May 6, 2006
BAGHDAD - Tuesday night is karaoke night at Saddam Hussein's former
Republican Palace in central Baghdad's fortified Green Zone.
To the beat of the music, Iraq's latest conquerors triumphantly take to
a stage that dominates the inner courtyard of what is today the
temporary US Embassy in Baghdad and bawl out old rock 'n' roll and
blues anthems to their heart's content.
A few meters away, soldiers take off their shirts to play volleyball,
State Department contractors have a party on the lawn, and bikini-clad
embassy workers splash in the swimming pool. All an awe-struck British
journalist gazing over the scene for the first time can do is
absent-mindedly mumble, "It's Saigon all over again."

They are not conquerors. They merely occupy parts of Iraq. They will
eventually be driven out by the patriotic Iraqi resistance.
Some day US helicopters will be pushed overboard into the Persian gulf.

We didn't have karaoke in Saigon. Besides, in Saigon, you could go
anywhere --- ANYWHERE -- and be safer than you would in some cities in
the United States. I loved Saigon, as did most of the Americans who
actually lived there. Baghdad is an utter mess, a horrid,
crime-ridden, dangerous, crazy mess.

It's like Saigon (actually, Ho Chi Minh City) in a lot more ways that that!

People like you are why it's Ho Chi Minh City instead of Saigon.

Thank you, but I really wasn't all that influential.
Vo Nguyen Giap, Ho Chi Minh, and the American people deserve at least
some of the credit.

Republican Palace in the irony-free Green Zone!

One might expect even an awe-struck Brit to remember that Her Majesty's
Government wanted no part of Saigon, whereas with New Baghdad, they're
sunk in the doo-doo as deep as Rancho Crawford itself.
