Jobless Claims Rise; Trade Gap Widens. 422,000 join the jobless lines. |
Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Rise
Initial jobless claims increased by 3,000 to 422,000 in the week that
ended Sept. 6, the Labor Department said Thursday.
It marked the third consecutive week of increase and the second in
which initial claims have been higher than 400,000.
Economists say numbers above that threshold indicate a weakening labor
market.
The four-week average, which smoothes out weekly fluctuations, rose by
4,500 to 402,750.
The increase surprised Wall Street.
A consensus forecast economists surveyed by Dow Jones and CNBC had
called for a decrease of 13,000 claims.

Weekly Jobless Claims Rise; Trade Gap Widens
WASHINGTON --
The U.S. trade deficit widened in July as purchases of foreign goods
and services climbed to their second highest level on record.
Separately, the number of American workers filing first-time
applications for unemployment benefits rose to a two-month high last
week, indicating employers remain reluctant to hire despite the recent
acceleration in economic growth.
