Bush heads to Asia, leaving domestic troubles
By Steve Holland
The trip offers Bush a breather from a number of problems and miscues
in his second term, from his slow response to Hurricane Katrina to the
fallout over a deal to let an Arab company operate terminals at six US
seaports.
Backing for his handling of the war in Iraq also has tumbled to an
all-time low.
Bush will spend a day in Islamabad to support Musharraf, a key ally in
America's war on terrorism since September 11.
Many experts believe al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is hiding on the
Pakistan side of the border with Afghanistan.
Bush speaks of Musharraf, who took power in a coup, with great
admiration and it seemed clear he will not apply much pressure on the
Pakistani leader to move faster and more forcefully on returning his
country to the path of democracy.
Bush said in an ABC News interview he would press Musharraf about
trying to find bin Laden and other al-Qaeda militants.
"I'm going to talk to my friend President Musharraf and remind him
that we have a common enemy in al-Qaeda, and so long as al-Qaeda is
plotting and planning in the neighbourhood, we're going to need to
work together to stop those plots," Bush said.
Asked about the dilemma Musharraf faces amid polls showing that
three-quarters of Pakistanis have an unfavourable view of the United
States and many are supportive of Bin Laden, Bush replied, "He'll have
to make a choice."
