Don't you believe it. Newsweek admits in the next sentence that half the
survey was done before Kerry's speech. And that the half done after the
speech showed Kerry with a 10-point lead in a three-way fight. Not a bad
bounce at all considering how polarised the electorate already is and how
this election has had more media coverage and more advertising than any
before. And if you read further on in the article there's lots more good
news for Kerry.

How about this NEWSWEEK Poll?
"Kerry/Edwards Leads Bush/Cheney 52 to 44 Percent"
"58 Percent Dissatisfied With Direction of Country"
"57 Percent Say War With Iraq Has Not Made U.S. Safer"
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/040731/nysa010a_3.html
You also left of this part from YOUR OWN cite:
"There are several factors that may have contributed to the limited surge,
including the timing of the poll. On Thursday, Kerry had just a two-point
lead over Bush (47 percent to 45 percent), suggesting that his Friday night
speech had a significant impact. Additionally, Kerry’s decision to announce
his vice-presidential choice of John Edwards three weeks before the
convention may have blunted the gathering’s impact. And limited coverage by
the three major networks also may have hurt Kerry."
"Kerry and Edwards have gained ground on several key election issues. For
the first time in the NEWSWEEK poll, as many voters strongly back Kerry as
strongly back Bush (31 percent to 30 percent). In an election expected to be
decided by a small number of unaffiliated voters, independents now lean
toward Kerry by a margin of 45 percent to 39 percent, with Nader pulling 7
percent. "
"Meanwhile, Bush’s own approval ratings continue to slip. Forty-five percent
say they approve of the job the president is doing vs. 49 percent who
disapprove. Three weeks ago, Bush’s approval rating was 48 percent; his high
was 82 percent in the week after the September 11 attacks."

Considering how much of the country has already fiercly decided how
it will vote, that 4% is a huge jump, never expected by Kerry (and short
of the 15% Bush manipulators were predicting).
Now... as I see it... Kerry is ahread, right?

On friday their poll had Kerry leading by 13.
In addition, the starting point should be BEFORE Edwards was selected,
while they are starting AFTER that.
Also Gallup says the average bounce is six points.
