Laura Bush on Tuesday offered two starkly different images
of local role models: teens successfully completing treatment
for drug addictions, and Republicans holding elective office.
Mrs. Bush praised five area teenagers and their treatment
counselors during a low-key, half-hour visit to an adolescent
treatment center in St. Charles.
Mrs. Bush said the center - run by Preferred Family Healthcare,
a nonprofit organization based in Kirksville - exemplified the
type of successful treatment services that deserve federal
financial help. And she praised the teens for seeking to
conquer the demons of drugs and alcohol abuse.
"Maybe you can give me some advice on what adults
should be doing to help our children," she said.
Less than two hours later, Mrs. Bush was at the
Millennium Hotel in downtown St. Louis for a luncheon
to help raise $200,000 in campaign money for
U.S. Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo., who is expecting a
challenge this fall from state Auditor Claire McCaskill,
a Democrat.
