Object: Let Every Nation Know: John F. Kennedy in His Own Words
http://www.buzzflash.com/hartmann/06/05/har06005.html
On November 22, 1963, the day he was assassinated in Dallas, John F.
Kennedy was scheduled to give a speech in which he would have said:
"We in this country, in this generation, are - by destiny rather than
choice - the watchmen on the walls of world freedom. We ask,
therefore, that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility, that
we may exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint, and that we
may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of 'peace
on earth, goodwill toward men.' That must always be our goal, and the
righteousness of our cause must always underlie our strength. For as
was written long ago, 'except the Lord keep the city, the watchman
waketh but in vain.'"
Compare to Bush's speeches...Something's wrong, folks, something's
terribly wrong in America today, as William Cooper liked to say.

You had to give them the vote!, March 11, 2006
Reviewer: Jack Maybrick (Shuttling between the streets of Whitechapel
and the shadow of Coogan's Bluff)

Sometime during the 1960's, William F. Buckley sardonically observed
that it was disgraceful the way that this country makes the Kennedys
fight for the throne.

In 2003, Buckley offered an interesting 40 year past retrospective on
the Kennedy presidency - its legacy was entirely personal. Kennedy
accomplished nothing that was singular and enduring in effect and in
fact had his share of NEGATIVE accomplishments. He is venerated today
only because of his physical beauty.

Buckley might have been anticipating this book, but he never would have
had the heart to say or even to think to question the utility of
women's suffrage in a television age - let alone to recognize the
danger that it poses.

This book by Gretchen Rubin (how can you doubt a name like this? Are
parents still naming their kids "Gretchen"?) might inadvertently
highlight that danger.

It makes a half-hearted attempt to be an objective analysis of the
Kennedy presidency and of Kennedy as a human being, and I'll even give
the authoress a modicum of credit for rejecting conspiratorial
explanations for the homicide.

But in the end, this book reads like a cross between one of those
shallow post-Camelot soft-soaping kiddie books (anyone remember "Meet
John F. Kennedy" by Nancy Bean White?) and a diary that might have been
written by a circa-1959 bobby soxer screeching at the top of her lungs
while watching JFK emerge half-naked from the ocean and onto the beach.

After giving her readers various perspectives on JFK, the authoress,
Gretchen Rubin, - who claims to be a historian - weighs in with her own
opinion that JFK really was a great president. Why? Uh - because he was
so dreamy. William F. Buckley really IS a genius!

What did Billy actually do? Anything? The best thing he ever did was
appear on PBS and get the conservatives hopes up. Thats about it.
Buckley is, at the best of times, the kind of guy who looks at the scene at
a lovely lake house and point out that the drains need cleaning.

What does any commentator do? I'd say that he's had more of an
influence on public policy than most.

Buckley is, at the best of times, the kind of guy who looks at the scene at

The drains DO need cleaning if liberals live there. In fact, the house
should be fumigated, preferably while the liberals are still living
there.
