Everyone calls them tsunamis but that's a nip word that has no real
meaning in english. They used to be called tidal waves but that of
course, is not what they are. They're caused by earthquakes so call
them quake waves.

Dumb idea. If we start purging our language of words of foreign origin
we'll end up just grunting. Just because "tsunami" is Japanese in origin
doesn't make it any less English than "hurricane", which is from the Spanish
word "huracán", or "tornado", which is from the Spanish "tronada". What
would you have us call these weather phenomena? "Big wind" and "little
tight fast wind"? Leave English alone!

The foundation of English is Germanic, though we could go back and get
those Germanic words that the French squished out of us like when they
make canard a la presse.

Just because "tsunami" is Japanese in origin

As long as they are carefully and logically created, constructed words
make a language less impenetrable. Of course that is often not the case,
and eventually you are left wondering what the hell they were thinking,
or maybe drinking.

can't let these countries simmer endlessly in disillusionment without
doing something about it because people become susceptible to delusional

efforts, certainly not all military, to remake the very face of the
world as constitutional representative democracy.

Bad idea, many tsunamis are not caused by quakes but land slides and
underwater mud slides and the like . Even a meteror impact can cause a
Tsunami. I hate to tell you this but many if not most words of English come
from other languages. Horror of hrrors, a large percentage come from French.
English has always adoped words of other languages making it one of the
richest languages there is. There is nothing wrong with the word tsunami, I
vote to keep using it.

Volcanos as well. Think of that 'loudest sound' right round Sumatra,
near where this quake was, Krakatoa.

If we wanted to be Germanic and build compounds up, I think 'ocean
displacement wave' has its merits. Clearly though, English likes a short
borrow over a long compound and 'tsunami', in Japanese literally
'harbour wave', works fine.
PBS ran a story about Hawaii last night and they mentioned that when
perhaps 1000 cubic kilometres of Hawaii collapse off into the Pacific
Ocean in massive landslides, the waves thus created have washed shells
on opposing shores thousands of miles away up to the 1200 foot level.
That's a wave like in the movie 'Deep Impact'. Similar events, it seems,
have occurred in the Atlantic due to undersea landslides off the coast
of Africa.

Wonderful............What's the point? That will certainly make the world
more prepared, huh?
Why bother? So those in danger can scream out a warning in TWO words instead
of ONE?
Were you born stupid or did you take night-classes?

Let's call banana yellow fruit. Or let's call steak cooked cow. You are
ridiculous! These words exist in the language and there is no need to
change the language. If you can't keep up then maybe you should go back to
school and learn the language better.

Hey stupid. These things were called tidal waves for a long time but
then somebody decided to change that and call them tsunamis. So don't
tell me names are never changed.

Look who is calling who "stupid"! Please show me *exactly* where I stated
that "names are never changed"!
I just think you seem to have problems with the English language as this is
at least the second time (that I am aware of) that you are looking for a
different word or phrase for something you don't like. Why don't you focus
on the facts, and stop worrying about the words or phrases that describe
them!

LBMHBF can't read. In another thread, it read "six" to mean "sixty."
*Definitely* some major comprehension issues with that idiot.

Of course what is the disadvantage to calling them the traditional
'tidal wave'? People who don't live near the Pacific Ocean often, it
seems, did not know about the word 'tsunami' but were very clear about
'tidal wave' being a big and dangerous wave. Now 'tsunami' is, of
course, forever seared into the minds of anyone with a TV.

Quake Waves sounds a little low-brow. Kind of too simple, I
think. How about the common term being "Earthquake waves" and the
technical term being "Energy flux induced water formations", with the
dangerous ones being "Energy flux induced land bound water
formations"?
