Check the Communication Act of 1928. Broadcast space is restricted by the
government and by nature. You can't broadcast if you don't have the
frequency. Broadcast stations have to conform to a few things like using
there broadcast space effectively.
ABC is asking for wholesale revocation of its owned and operated stations
plus its affiliates. You see its not right to lie. Thats the law. If you
lie you have to make sure that people know by calling the production drama
or comedy or something similar.
ABC will survive but this is gonna bring tons of problems.

Media Matters has stories that expose many of the falsehoods
contained in the miniseries. ABC has admitted that it
includes fictional events and other falsehoods. They claim
that they've changed the film in order to make it less
misleading.

These falsehoods include:
A scene in which the CIA agents and the Northern Alliance
(specifically leader Massoud) have surrounded a house with
Osama bin Laden in it. The CIA agents call the White House
and ask for permission to go in and arrest Osama. The White
House refuses to give permission to do so. The scene ends
with Sandy Berger hanging up on the agents.
This scene is entirely fictional. The CIA had not sighted
Osama at the camp; Massoud was not with the CIA; the CIA
(obviously) did not ask for permission to capture Osama; the
Clinton White House in fact never refused permission to any
request made by the CIA in its work against al-Qaida; and
the end of the scene, with Berger hanging, was an unscripted
improvisation by the actor.
That's one example; there are many more.

Like the man said, libel, slander and historical revisionism are not
protected free speech. Part of the deal with getting a broadcast
license is that you have to commit to providing a public service.
That's because the airwaves are owned by the public, not by the
corporations who hold the broadcast licenses. And the American people
are not served when THEIR history is rewritten to suit the agenda of
some rightwing wacko.
