Liberal Media Bias? Iraqi Soccer Team |
I find this very interesting... one article from the European press covering
the story:
http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=3378141
It's about the soccer team resenting Bush using the Iraqi athletes for
political gain in his commercials.
One player said he would be fighting US troops if he weren't in the
Olympics. Other quotes:
"We don't wish for the presence of Americans in our country. We want them to
go away," said Sadir, 21, whose home town of Najaf has been battered by the
war.
Another star player, Ahmed Manajid, 22, said of Mr Bush: "How will he meet
his god having slaughtered so many men and women?"
-"He has committed so many crimes."
-"I want to defend my home. If a stranger invades America and the people
resist, does that mean they are terrorists?
-"Everyone (in Fallujah) has been labelled a terrorist. These are all lies.
Fallujah people are some of the best people in Iraq."
-"The American army has killed so many people in Iraq. What is freedom when
I go to the stadium and there are shootings on the road?"
------------------------
Next we come to MSNBC.com's coverage of the story which is significantly
watered down. The harshest quotes aren't included. A bulk of the article
actually talks about how journalists were wrong to get these answers of the
athletes!
-"It seems the story was engineered."
-It is a little naughty," he said. "The players are not very sophisticated
politically; they are a little naive. Whoever posed these questions knew
that the reaction would be negative."
-"It is possible something was lost in translation. It's a free, new Iraq,
and the players are entitled to their opinions but we are disappointed."

Just continues reinforcing to me how far from liberal the US media is.
