Liberal Racism Watch |
Adam Howard, a blogger for The Nation:
Has the Republican Party suddenly caught a
case of jungle fever? This year Republicans
will most likely run three African-Americans
in statewide elections: Kenneth Blackwell (for
governor in Ohio), former NFL star Lynn
Swann (for governor in Pennsylvania) and
Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele,
who is seen as the frontrunner for the
Republican Senate nomination there.
Excuse me, "jungle fever"? What do these three distinguished politicians
have to do with the "jungle"?
--
If black Democrats--and white Democrats, for that matter--cannot disagree
respectfully with a conservative who happens to be black, they have no
moral authority when it comes to combating racism in other
manifestations.

"Jungle Fever" refers to a movie. Part of the plot involves dealing with
interracial relationships and how people react to them.
Not Spike Lee's best work, but a decent film.
Hope that clears things up for you!

How are those politicians linked to "jungle fever"? They are Black men
running for political office. What does that have to do with interracial
relationships?

The writer is pointing out the sudden "love of black candidates" by the
white Republican party establishment.

Sorry, but it still doesn't imply an "interracial" relationship in my book.

Don't be sorry - I wasn't the one who used it.
What I don't get is why the Republicans, when hunting up black candidates,
can't find better people. Steele, the guy running for Senate in Maryland is
a frigging idiot. The fool they have running in Ohio is a crook. If
Republicans want to run black candidates, why don't they get better ones?

Let's say YOU get to pick. Who would you choose? Remember, they have to
have name recognition AND want to run.

Good point - with the way the polls have been for Republicans since Katrina,
good candidates don't want to run.

Ya mean like the typical black race whining, pro-affirmative
discrimination type.
Perhaps someone like Kerosene Maxine Dances With Gang Members Waters,
Revrum Sharpton, or Sista McKinney.

No, I mean like "not an idiot" and "not a crook".
Steele is an idiot and Blackwell is a crook.

You need to get out more.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungle_fever
Jungle Fever is a 1991 film directed by Spike Lee, starring Wesley Snipes
and Annabella Sciorra.
The success and popularity of this film has also spurred the usage of
"Jungle Fever" to mean a couple of more than one race (notably a black
person and white person together), or one who is attracted to a member of
another race from themselves is considered to have "Jungle Fever."
