Lifetime of environmental damage for 6-months supply of oil |
From a Portland Press Herald editorial, 3/18/05:

Arctic drilling doesn't belong in the budget bill
A Senate vote Wednesday put Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
one step closer to being drilled for oil, and that's bad news both for
the environment and for congressional process.
By a narrow vote - 51 to 49 - the Senate rejected an effort to remove
the provision from the budget resolution that would open up the refuge
to drilling.
Republicans likely had an easier time winning this battle because oil
prices have reached a record high of $56 a barrel.
The refuge, however, isn't likely to provide the nation with more than
a six-month supply of oil, and the impacts of drilling there would
last a lifetime.
