Yes - i know that means the traitorous SUV owners will then have to
waste a little gas driving to multiple filling stations but we have to
make these selfish bastards realize that they are the reason we have
$3.50 gas.

killing two birds with one stone when you go out in the car/truck.
If people use their heads a bit I don't see why we can't all enjoy personal
vehicles from now until the end of time.
But I do think it is reprehensible to be buying large Escalades then only
use them as a car. It really is wasteful. A Christian wouldn't do that as
the Bible says the 'righteous person is thrift' and a humanist / secularist
probably shouldn't do so just out of a sense of decency!

including rationing of many consumer goods including gasoline, to help
the war effort.
And we're at war now.
This is a matter of patriotism.
We can no longer sustain being in hock to OPEC oil sheiks anymore.
We're buying fuel from Saudi oil sheiks who then turn right around and
use that money to finance so-called "religious" schools that teach
Muslims it's cool to kill Americans.
Weaning ourselves off of Arab fuel is one way we can all do our part to
support our troops.

Second, you nay have noticed that this is 2005 not 1945 and hence not WWII.
Our troops are anything but short of fuel. If it makes you feel patriotic to

Third, I agree that we need to become energy self sufficient by developing
domestic sources. The business about not buying raghead oil has an emotional
appeal, but would accomplish little opther than to help the balance of trade
deficit. Were we to stop, the Chinese, Japanese and a number of others would
quickly absorb the excess capacity. The Chinese are undergoing an industrial
revolution and are on the prowl for OIL, and frankly they are a potentially
much more formidable enemy than the idiot arabs. The Saudis like dollars but
yen would do nicely. This same money would trickle down to the local
madrassa and the Kill America crowd, whether or not we are buying their oil.
We could better support our troops by killing Wahabi Mullahs. By and large,

car is OK with me as, unlike you, the size of my car doesn't have to

ridculous. It doesn't make sense to squander limited natural resources nor
does it make sense to pollute. Individuals should be encouraged to act
responsibly. Social engineering really should be limited to maybe tax breaks
on very-fuel efficient vehicles etc.
However, punitive measures on free citizens making free choices doesn't make
sense to me. If someone wants an SUV who am I, you, or Mr. Brown to say he
can't have one? There are a lot of ways society can move to better vehicles
without some kind of Nazi imposition. Heck I WANT a Prius and when the time
comes I'm getting one. And I'm free to encourage you to get one over say an
SUV [free speech]. But screw the people who would force anyone.
But in the same breath screw the people who would deny us better vehicles.
Companies like Exon shouldn't be allowed to buy up patents on ways to build
better vehicles then deep six them so no one can build them. The governments
of the world, which are the organizations that issue and manage the

And in wartime, you can't always run your society the exact same way you

our lifestyle, as any airline passenger will attest. In World War II,
numerous consumer goods were rationed. And since auto manufacturers had
switched over to manufacturing Army vehicles in that war, you couldn't
easily buy a new car till the war was over.

against Islamic terrorism. Protecting the lives of our citizenry from
foreign attackers is a perfectly valid reason for the Government to take

Limiting gasoline purchases at the pump was tried in the 1970's, but it
caused fuel panics--drivers got so spooked that they did nothing but
drive from one gas station to another to keep topping off their gas
tanks. (And every time you top off, some fuel spills out onto the ground.)
The right answer is the one we implemented in World War II--rationing.
I think we should issue books of ration coupons, just like in WW2.
(Because we are at war now too.)
Without a ration coupon presented to the manager of the gas station, you
can't get gasoline. That way you can check your remaining coupons in
your ration book in the comfort of your own home and know how much
gasoline you are allowed to buy. You can then make plans to use it more
wisely. You can even trade ration coupons--if you need more gasoline
for your SUV, ask a friend who drives a high-mileage car to give you a
few of her coupons.

I don't like the trading coupon feature. Coupons would then be bought
and sold on every street corner and the rich fat cats would still get
all the gas they wanted for their hummer. We need to discourage people
from buying large vehicles. I've said for years that penalties for
highway crimes like speeding or drunk driving should be proportional to
the vehicle weight. If people knew that 70 in a 55 while driving a 6000
pound Burb would get them a month in jail they'd instead buy the small
car that only carried a $200 fine for the same crime.
