Object: MISSION NOT ACCOMPLISHED
The latest issue of Time Magazine (Oct. 6th) has that infamous picture
of George Bush, in his flight suit, standing on top of that battleship,
with the headline reading, "Mission Not Accomplished".

From the article, Marine General Anthony Zinni said this about the Iraq
war:

"It reminds me of Vietnam. Here we have strategic thinkers who have
long wanted to invade Iraq. They saw an opportunity, and they used
the...9/11 emotions as a catalyst and justification. It's another Gulf
of Tonkin".

The vast majority of the people in the world, and most world leaders
opposed Bush's rationale for going to war in Iraq, and they now can
hardly their sense that Bush is getting what he deserves.

We are presently bogged down in what will become the lengthiest & most
expensive quagmire in our nation's history. Our country will be paying
in blood and treasure for decades to come. We got into this mess
because President Bush stretched and altered the intelligence data to
fit his predetermined decision to go to war.

It was exactly one year ago, this month, that the Senate Foreign
Relations Committe was engaged in contentious hearings on Iraq, loudly
and clearly, over the utter lack of any postwar preparation. The State
Department, as usual, was trying to find a multilateral approach to
Iraq, and to boost the status of opponents to the regime inside Iraq.
And the CIA was warning that governing post-war Iraq will not be as easy
as the Iraqi exiles were claiming. But the NeoCons, exemplified by
Donald Rumsfeld, won the day, by insisting that we should just go it
alone & ignore all other information, they said that we will be welcomed
into Iraq as "liberator". And OMB Director Mitch Daniels estimated
that the total cost of the Iraq adventure will be under $60 million
(that's right, million, not billion). Mitch Daniels ignored a widely
publicized UN report conducted by Rice University, a report that all the
experts agreed with, that it would cost more than $40 billion to restore
Iraq's dilapidated oil industry.

On page 37, the article goes on:

Iraq's proud citizens cannot be expected to be happy with the reality of
foreign soldiers on their streets. "There is a real nationalistic
feeling here," says a diplomat. "It's a real country, and it has a real
national feeling that it is being occupied. And even if they don't know
who will lead them tomorrow, they don't want to be occupied." An Iraqi
who opposed Saddam Hussein from within complains that Bremmer said
Iraqis are not yet ready to lead the country. "The Iraqis are civilized
people", he says, "but Paul Bremmer's words make us sound like
children."

In conclusion, and the article doesn't say this, but it's obvious to me
that Bush has absolutely no idea what Iraq is or what he is doing in
Iraq, the only thing Bush understands is that Iraq has oil, and Bush
doesn't even understand how to get that oil out of the ground. So there
we have it.
REGIME CHANGE BEGINS AT HOME.
