Mitt Romney is another stupid empty suit who doesn't know what the hell he is talking about |
This article from Juan Cole's most
informative website at http://www.juancole.com/
Thursday, May 10, 2007
Mitt Romney has attacked Al Sharpton's remark about
his being defeated by those who 'really do believe
in God' as a piece of religious bigotry.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/05/09/sharpton.romney/
But first of all the remark came in the context of
Sharpton's debate with Christopher Hitchens
concerning belief in God, and Sharpton maintains
that he was just saying that it wasn't the Hitchens
types who would defeat Romney, but the believers. So
it isn't clear that Sharpton intended to say that
Mormons don't really believe in God.
But Romney is maybe not the most credible person when
it comes to decrying religious bigotry. He is himself
guilty of conflating Muslim movements in a way that
does injustice to them. Last week during the debate,
he said:
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/05/04/america/04transcript.php?page=5
' "We'll move everything to get him [Bin Laden].
But I don't want to buy into the Democratic
pitch, that this is all about one person, Osama
bin Laden. Because after we get him, there's
going to be another and another. This is about
Shi'a and Sunni. This is about Hezbollah and
Hamas and al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood.
This is the worldwide jihadist effort to try
and cause the collapse of all moderate Islamic
governments and replace them with a caliphate.
They also probably want to bring down the
United States of America. This is a global
effort we're going to have to lead to overcome
this jihadist effort. It's more than Osama bin
Laden. But he is going to pay, and he will die." '
(end of quote)
What does he mean, "this is about Sunni and Shia?"
Is he saying that all Muslims of both major branches
are his targets, and that he associates them with
al-Qaeda?
The inclusion of the Muslim Brotherhood in this list
of jihadi groups willing to use violence does a
grave injustice to the many members of the Egyptian
Muslim Brotherhood who eschewed violence to
participate in civil politics. The Muslim Brotherhood
has 88 seats in the Egyptian parliament, and Egypt is
a non-NATO ally of the United States. Did Romney just
declare war on them? Isn't this lumping together of
disparate Muslim parties a form of Islamophobia, i.e.
religious bigotry?
By the way, Tariq al-Hashimi, the Vice President of
Iraq who met with US VP ***** Cheney on Wednesday, is
a leader of the Iraqi Islamic Party, which is the
Iraqi Muslim Brotherhood, founded at Mosul in 1938.
Paul Bremer appointed an IIP leader to his Interim
Governing Council, so the party has for long been a
cornerstone of what policy toward the Iraqi religious
Sunnis the Bush administration has had. Is Mitt
Romney at war with al-Hashimi?
(For more about the Muslim Brotherhood, see this
article from Foreign Affairs.)
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2007/03/the_moderate_muslim_brotherhoo.html
As for the Lebanese Hizbullah, as a Shiite group it
just isn't like the others Romney named, and it is a
deadly enemy of al-Qaeda. It has seats in the
Lebanese parliament and until recently had a couple
cabinet ministries in the government, and is among
the most reliably nationalist of the Lebanese
political parties. Although it has tangled repeatedly
with its neighbor, Israel (which has invaded Lebanon
three times since 1978 and occupied Lebanese
territory for nearly two decades), it hasn't been
involved in international terrorism for a good
decade. As Shiites, the members of Hizbullah do not
believe in a caliphate, unlike some sectarian Sunnis.
Hizbullah leader Hasan Nasrallah 'has condemned
al-Qaeda for terrorist actions that target
“innocents,” and he has disassociated himself from
the extreme Islamic fundamentalism of the Taliban.'
http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_701835564/Hassan_Nasrallah.html
Hamas likewise has local aspirations and is not part
of a world-wide jihadist conspiracy to create a
caliphate and destroy the United States. Its leaders
have repeatedly said that they do not and will not
attack US targets. If anyone has faced high-level
political conspiracies and is being destroyed, it is
the Palestinian people.

Does anyone else find it odd that Romney completely ignored
Christopher Hitchens' comment about the racist history of the Mormon
(LDS) religion?
It seems to me that "we the people" should be more concerned about
whether Mr. Romney has a satisfactory respect for, or sensitivity to,
black (or minority) issues than whether or not he worships what some
may consider a 'different' god.
Having said this, I still feel he may be the best Repub in the group
that is now running.

Yeah we need another backwoodsy dumbass who panders to the
"nuke-em-all" Michael Savage crowd of sore losers....someone who
doesn't know the difference between his Shia and Sunnis making
critical foreign policy strategy decisions....someone from a cult who
thinks they are the damn Israelis.
It really depends on GOP voters. Do you want to keep on
a policy that guarantees losing elections to Democrats or
do you want to return to your traditional roots that Bush
Junior pandered to in 2000? iow: No foreign nation building
or unnecassary Middle East wars.
Do you want to inundate the country with cheap Illegal Immigrant
labor or do you want the feds to live up to their constitutional duty
to protect the border?
The only candidate on the right side of both issues is Ron Paul.

The only candidate on the right side of both issues is Ron
Paul.
Oddly enough...Bush promised no nation building too.
But Bush promised, at about the same time at an
American Jewish Committee fundraiser, to change
the regime in Iraq and so did McCain, Forbes and
Bauer. Since I saw that on C-SPAN I'd say it's a
fair bet that the Democrats who voted for Public
Law 107-243 (Authorization for occupying Iraq)
were aware that there were political reasons for
the war before they voted on it, as did I.
Ron Paul has an impeccable voting record against
Public Law 107-243, as well as a bill formalizing the
policy of changing the regime in Iraq during the
Clinton administration and a similar bill concerning
Iran just last year.
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll105.xml
And, like political donors, voting records are what
I go by.
And promised to make America a better place. I think that would
cover the illegal issue too.
Well it's no secret that the GOP likes the porous southern
border largely unpatrolled for the cheap labor and that
Democrats have, in part, served as a liberal-minority
coalition party and are willing to play the race card in
order to keep Hispanic voters.
So it's a toss up to see if Democrats or Republicans
actually put an appropriate amount of border patrol
agents on the border first or if they ever do at all.
Ron Paul is less ethnocentric in his approach than
Tancredo (the only other candidate on the right side
of the issue) and therefore less threatening to the
growing Hispanic Republican voting bloc who you
will need to keep onboard in order to actually
accomplish the task.
America can't afford to trust conservatives (or libertarians, who
are actually conservatives except for the name they use) for at
least two generations.
Personally, I don't like labels that much since every
part of the "coalition" that makes up the GOP uses
the term "conservative" differently.
It's fair to say that Ron Paul is, at least, as much a
fiscal consevative as Romney is.....and without the
promises to war interests that are responsible for
the current deficit.

He probably did. I pay little attention to Sharpton
other than when CORE chairman Roy Ennis pushed
him backwards, in his chair, on the floor for calling him
an uncle tom once.....now that was cool.
His fat ***** looked like a bowling ball with legs in the air.
I pay little attention to Christopher Hitchens either.
Actually I made the post to demonstrate Romney's
ignorance concerning the region where we are fighting
a war.Now I've made a point of learning a bit about Iraq
and the centuries long rivalry between Shia and Sunni
since we have an ongoing civil war to referee there.
Looks like Romney is one of those Hawks who hasn't
made the effort to scrutinize the wisdom of his position.
