Syphilis rates jump among gay men in Chicago

Chicago health officials called for increased syphilis
testing and
awareness efforts, particularly in the gay community, after
Chicago
Department of Public Health numbers showed a 44-percent
jump in
syphilis cases during the first six months of 2005.
In numbers released Dec. 9 CDPH reported 194 infectious
syphilis
cases in the first half of 2005, compared to 135 cases in
the first
half of 2004. Of the 194 cases reported for the first six
months of
this year, CDPH said 69 percent were among gay and bisexual
men, an
increase from 55 percent in the same period in 2004.
The majority of those cases, CDPH officials said, were in
men ages
30-39, and half were in men who were also HIV-positive.
The jump comes after several years of mostly encouraging
syphilis
incidence numbers for CDPH. The department credited a
vigorous
campaign by its Syphilis Elimination Task Force for
bringing
syphilis cases down from 353 cases in 2002 to 297 last
year.
"Unfortunately, in 2005 the numbers are not so good," said
William
Wong, medical director of CDPH's Division of STD/HIV/AIDS
Public
Policy and Programs.
Wong said the Task Force's media campaign "ceased primarily
because
of a lack of funding" this year. But CDPH is re-funding the
campaign
for the coming year, he said.
"In 2006 we're anticipating another social marketing
campaign," Wong
said.
Beau Gratzer, of Howard Brown Health Center, said syphilis
may be
"hitting a broader part" of the gay community right now
than it did
in previous years.
"We had for a while a rise in cases that we saw associated
with men
looking for sex on the Internet, for one," Gratzer said.
Gratzer and other HBHC officials, as well as CDPH
officials, called
for more testing and awareness programs targeting gay men.
"What's really important for us is that people who realize
they're
symptomatic seek testing and treatment immediately,"
Gratzer said.
"Finding those symptomatic people is really important in
terms of
controlling the epidemic."
Gratzer said HBHC does not charge for syphilis tests. CDPH
offers
free, confidential syphilis testing and treatment at its
six STD/HIV
Specialty Clinics. Information about those services is
available by
calling 311.
Initial symptoms of syphilis usually include a single
sore-a
chancre-at the point of infection, but may include multiple
sores.
The chancres are usually firm, round, small and painless,
and last
for three to six weeks.
Secondary symptoms develop later and generally include a
rash that
doesn't itch, often in the form of rough red or reddish
brown spots
on the palms and on the bottoms of feet. Secondary symptoms
can also
include fever, swollen lymph glands, sore throat, patchy
hair loss,
headaches, weight loss, muscle aches and fatigue.
A person who has had syphilis for less than a year can be
cured with
a single shot of penicillin.

A conversation with North Side locals reveals that an unusually high
number of Arab gay men began to frequent the bars on Clark St. and
Broadway starting about six months ago. Pakistanis and Palestinians
are known to infest the Skokie suburb but are rarely seen on Chicago's
North side so this aroused considerable interest. Gay men are normally
so stoned on methamphetamine and obsessed with the night's date so most

insanity. Muslims have suffered from a near total lack of health care
for many centuries and the syphilis that is so common in Dar es-Islam
has gone mostly untreated = this has led to wide spread brain damage
amongst the Ummah - the severest guarantees a great career as a Muslim
Cleric or Scholar.
Local health care officials state off the record that they are seeing
new strains of gonorrhea as well as an unusually stubborn permutation
of syphilis in this latest infection which appears similar to
infections seen only in zoo animals. Speculation is that the Islamic
Community in Chicago has infected Chicago's Gay Community with one of
the many diseases that they are known to carry since Muslim men
commonly engage in sexual relations with cows, goats, sheep and ewes.
Democrats also have very high rates of Syphilis and Homosexuals are
almost exclusively Democratic.
Syphilis is a real killer and poses a serious threat to the Public
Health but AIDS is the real concern now since HIV infection is reaching
near epidemic levels in Afghanistan and Iran which is where many of the
drug using Gay Muslim immigrants have come from in the last decade. A
sharp rise in HIV Infection is now a major concern as well since these
infections obviously were passed on via un-protected sodomy. HIV has
been rising at between 22-25% for the last ten years here but a twenty
five percent rise will literally devastate the Gay Community.
