Muslims Bomb Crowded Market |
The Star (Malaysia)

Another bomb explodes in southern Thailand
BANGKOK, Thailand -- A bomb exploded at a market in one of Thailand's
predominantly Muslim southern provinces early Saturday, killing one
Buddhist man and wounding another seven people in the latest of a
series of terrorist attacks.
The device, believed to have been triggered by mobile phone, exploded
at a morning market in the Tanto district of Yala province around 7:00
am, police Capt. Peerasil Ritapipat said.
The wounded included a 1-year-old boy, three women and three men, all
of them Buddhists, he said.
Thailand is largely Buddhist, but the southern provinces of Yala,
Pattani and Narathiwat have Muslim majorities.
Police have evacuated vendors and other people from the market for
fear that more bombs might have been planted in the area.
The blast came just hours after another bomb exploded by a roadside
restaurant in nearby Narathiwat late Friday, wounding 14 people. That
bombing was one of several apparently coordinated attacks Friday in at
least five other parts of the province.
A recent upswing of violence in southern Thailand has been attributed
mostly to the revival of a long-dormant Islamic separatist movement.
More than 500 people have been killed in attacks in the area since
January.
Southern Thai Muslims have long complained of "discrimination,"
particularly in jobs and education.
