Mitt meets Mitty
Was Romney any more economical with the truth than many other
politicians?
They say that great politicians cannot tell a lie.
The trouble is most voters can tell one a mile off.
Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate, is the latest
politician to be lassoed by his own Walter Mitty imagination.
Having assured Americans that he “saw” his father, the late Governor
George Romney of Michigan, march with Martin Luther King, Romney has
now told sceptics who queried his account that it was “a figure of
speech”.
Romney was upholding a venerable tradition.
In creating a debate about what the word “saw” means, Romney was
echoing an earlier debate instigated by Bill Clinton over “what the
meaning of the word is is” in terms of his sexual relations with the
White House intern, Monica Lewinsky.In his heart, Clinton may still
believe that he “did not have sexual relations with that woman”.
Politicians have long regarded truth as so precious a commodity that
it should not be squandered too liberally.
Ronald Reagan used to recount war anecdotes that turned out to have
been borrowed from old movies.
When cornered over Iran-Contragate, Reagan minted a majestic mea
culpa, explaining:
“A few months ago I told the American people I did not trade arms for
hostages. My heart and my best intentions still tell me this is true,
but the facts and the evidence tell me it is not.”
It took Woodward and Bernstein to jog Richard Nixon's memory about
what happened in the Watergate complex.
George W. Bush was a childhood fan of Eric Carle's classic children's
picture book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
This was before it was even published.
Nor is this tendency to metamorphose into a cross between Peter
Sellers's Chauncey Gardiner and Woody Allen's Zelig uniquely American.
Other leaders, too, wish to plant themselves in the thick of history's
great moments.
Kim Jong Il claims to have been born on North Korea's sacred Mount
Paekdu, his birth marked by a bright star and a double rainbow in the
sky and a swallow descending from Heaven.
Western historians say he was actually born in an army camp in
Siberia.
