5 US soldiers killed in Iraq
Attacks in central Baghdad, Samara, Miqdadiya, Al-Anbar claim lives of more
US troops.
BAGHDAD - A US soldier was killed and three others wounded in a grenade
attack Thursday in central Baghdad, the military said.
"One US soldier was killed and three wounded when their unit was attacked by
hand grenades early May 20 in central Baghdad," the US-led coalition said in
a statement that gave no further details.
A second US soldier was killed and another wounded when their convoy was hit
by a roadside bomb and gunfire north of Baghdad, the US military said
Thursday.
"One 1st Infantry Division soldier was killed and one was wounded when their
combat patrol was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small
arms fire near Samarra," the military said in a statement.
The attack occurred at 5:28 pm (1328 GMT) Wednesday, it said, adding
soldiers returned fire, wounding three suspected attackers near the city,
125 kilometres (75 miles) north of Baghdad.
Two of the wounded suspects were arrested, but a third escaped, it said.
A third US soldier was killed when a gunman hiding in a cemetery fired on a
patrol in Miqdadiya, north of the Iraqi capital, the US military.
"One soldier was killed by small arms fire while on patrol near Miqdadiya,"
100 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of Baghdad, the 1st Infantry Division
said in a statement.
"The attacker fired on the patrol from a cemetery," the statement said,
adding that the attack occurred on Tuesday.
It said another soldier died after an electrical incident Tuesday near
Baiji, 190 kilometers (145 miles) north of the capital.
Also, a US marine was killed in action in Iraq's western Al-Anbar province,
the military said late Wednesday.
"A Marine assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed in
action May 18 in the Al Anbar Province while conducting security and
stability operations," the military said in a statement, which gave no
further details.
The latest casualty takes the US military death toll in Iraq to 789 since
the start of the US-led invasion in March 2003. This figure includes 575
troops killed in action.

A pattern of deception
A hard truth appears to have escaped the notice of the public and received
scant attention from the media: Bush is the first president in American
history to use deceptive propaganda as his main means of communications in
selling his policies. His pattern of deception continues unabated and in
direct conflict with the notion of the public's informed consent that is
central to American democracy.
