Object: National Defence cost
Bush has increased the defense budget by 20%. The United States defense
spending is greater than the total of ALL the other countries of the world
combined.
Why do we waste such huge amounts when there are no other countries in the
world that present a plausible serious threat to the United States?
Iraq certainly did not. It's defense budget was a paltry $1.3 billion
compared to the present U.S. budget of $407 billion.
When the Soviet Union was threatening us we needed a strong defense. There
is no longer a Soviet Union - only a greatly shrunken and weak Russia. Today
there are no nations that present any plausible serious threat to the United
States.
The Home Land security budget has been substantially increased to counter
the threat from Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda's threat is terrorism - not military
attack.

20% from what? Why don't you study this graph a bit. Even without the
estimates, you can see what has happened to Defense Spending. Who cares if
it is more than "ALL" the countries. You are incredulous about it for what
reason?

Why do we waste such huge amounts when there are no other countries in the
world that present a plausible serious threat to the United States?

There are MANY "plausible" threats. Threat is probable. This is simply
factual. In the natural world, what is at the top, must come down. It is
the natural order of things as we know it. You will never know when the
armies of the world save the world, but you will know it when they don't.

Iraq certainly did not. It's defense budget was a paltry $1.3 billion
compared to the present U.S. budget of $407 billion.

Iraq is just a piece of the East. Iraq was at the end of diplomacy. It was
a natural transgression. After Afghanistan, Bush felt the need to "tighten
the reigns" so to speak. The UN did back the intelligence no matter what
fuddy-duddy old guy(s) put it together. At the point of any intel that Bush
and Co. gleened, it was too late. There was not an impartial researcher
left considering years of Iraqi intelligence gathering.

When the Soviet Union was threatening us we needed a strong defense. There
is no longer a Soviet Union - only a greatly shrunken and weak Russia.

Today

there are no nations that present any plausible serious threat to the

United

States.

There are still several thousand nukes in the "shrunken and weak Russia".
Again, to say there is no "plausible" serious threat is something that is
factually wrong. It can't even be argued. It is impossible for there to
not be a plausible threat.

The Home Land security budget has been substantially increased to counter
the threat from Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda's threat is terrorism - not military
attack.

You just never know now do ya?
A strong military is a good thing for the US, and it is a good thing for the
world.

yes, that's a keeper.
I had a similar line graph that showed it for all years (not just every
4 years as yours did), but I don't have it anymore. You can probably
search Google for my posts on that topic in which I cited it.

We *spend* such huge amounts so that:
If necessary, like after 9-11, the U.S. can field an armed force
thousands of miles away and go to all-out war within a matter of weeks.
The U.S. can strike any nation on earth in every continent on earth
within weeks of deciding to do so.
No other nation on earth can project its power all around the world on
such short notice.
