Carter was criticized in 1979 for saying the nation was in a national
malaise. Well guess what - the national malaise is back.
2005
Casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan, disaster in the south, a record 5th year
with no increase in real income, gas over $3 per gallon and climbing,
falling consumer confidence and record numbers of personal bankruptcies.
On July 15, 1979, Carter spoke at length to Americans of his plans to solve
the energy problem. But first he spoke of another problem, a deeper one, he
felt, and one that required a greater national effort to solve. He referred
to a "crisis of confidence"; several days later he mentioned "a national
malaise."
