Nationwide Gas Prices Set Another Record
Retail gas prices hit another record high over the past three weeks,
mirroring a rapid increase in the cost of crude oil, according to a
nationwide survey released Sunday.
The average price for all three grades rose nearly 20 cents to $2.53
in the three weeks ending Aug. 12, said Trilby Lundberg, who publishes
the semimonthly Lundberg Survey of 7,000 gas stations around the
country.

Regular unleaded in most of Canada has been around $3.60us / gallon for the
past few months. I wish someone could explain that one.

The factors affecting gasoline prices are as many and varied as there are
countries.
Taxes play a huge role in the retail cost of gasoline. US gas taxes are very
low compared to those in other industrialized countries, making our gas seem
cheap in comparison. Third world countries rarely apply significant taxes to
gasoline and fuels..
The source of the crude influences costs, too. The US still has significant
production of easliy (cheaply) refined crude (we produce about 45% of the
crude we consume), keeping our costs down. Add the fact that our government
heavily subsidizes the oil industry (look at the energy bill congress just
passed).
Some countries only have access to heavier, dirty crude (or their supply is
is in large part this crude). This can significantly increase the cost of
gas. Having your own refining capacity can also indluence costs.
Some third world countries directly subsidize the cost of gasoline.
In the case of the Phillipines, they are a net oil producer and the
government deliberately keeps costs down through subsidies.

Maybe because there is about $1.40 in taxes per gallon for Canadian gas.

I wonder why the price of gas is so high in the US, but still remains like
30¢ per gallon in other countries like the Philipinnes. Shouldnt a
worldwide commodity cost the same everywhere?
