Object: NATO is not irrelevant, and it is SHEER ignorance to say so...
NATO is not irrelevant, and it is SHEER ignorance of the true purposes and
intentions of NATO and its North Atlantic Treaty to state so. NATO was
intended from the start to be more than a military alliance.

First, the North Atlantic Treaty was intended to be more than collective
defense and mainly Article Two (the Canadian Article -Lester Pearson was
it's chief author) was intended to nurture NATO into more than a military
alliance. (See Escott Reid's (1977) Time of Fear and Hope: The Making of the
North Atlantic Treaty, 1947-1949. McClelland and Stewart: Toronto, Ontario,
CA. Chapter: "More than a Military Alliance").

**We believe that a North Atlantic treaty would help to defend the
civilization to which we belonged. We hoped that behind the defensive
barrier which that treaty would create, our civilization would purge itself
of many of its faults and grow in unity and strength, in wisdom and
compassion ** (Escott Reid 1977: 25).

In the post Cold War, NATO was intended to be more of a political alliance -
not a totally military one. It will have to be once it takes on new members
and becomes 26 members.
And - one of the more important political jobs the NATO Alliance has been
involved in is the military and political transformation of former Warsaw
Pact nations into democracies. Part of NATO's transformation to the post
Cold War world is to become a political forum. This is not a new idea - and
was discussed as part of the meaning of the Consultation Article - Article
Four. NATO helped out fighting fires in Portugal and is involved in civil
emergency management. The NATO Alliance will continue to have and take on
security tasks, including a rapid reaction force, the NATO Response Force.

Now - Europe needs NATO - and America needs NATO. Europeans have a history
of not only an unwillingness to spend anything for their own defense, but
the pacifists and Greens that are a part of the European political landscape
will make it difficult for Europe's Common Foreign and Security Policy to
live without NATO. And Iraq is proving to the Americans that unilateralism
DOES NOT work and that America needs Allies just as much as the Europeans
do. Europe and America need each other - and they both NEED NATO. They need
NATO to become more than a military alliance and become also a political, as
well as a military sanctuary for freedom loving peoples.
"Long live the entangling Alliance!"

You are joking right?
Spend more on guns and ammo or feed people.
The Soviet Union wasn't defeated by NATO it was defeated by taking Raisa
Gorbochev to Bloomingdales, and New York Fashion week.
These archaic methods of international relations must be put aside.
