Navy, Marines Prepare for Fla. Exercise

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- A training exercise beginning
Monday at Eglin Air Force Base will bring the Navy and Marine Corps
together in the first such joint operation at the Florida Panhandle base.
More than 7,400 Marines and sailors will participate in the exercise,
due to continue until Dec. 17.
For nearly 60 years, the Navy and Marines used Vieques, a tiny island
off the coast of Puerto Rico, for bombing and gunnery practice.
The exercise will involve rifle attacks, mortar and artillery firings,
offshore
Naval gunfire and aircraft bombing runs.
