The Ghost of Adolph Hitler: Nazi Influence in America

Here it is 2003, and the ghost of the notorious Nazi Adolph Hitler haunts
America.
He's in the White House in Washington, DC and the governor's mansion in
Sacramento, California.
He roams the halls of the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in
Huntsville, Alabama. His Nazi minions Arthur Rudolph and Werner Von Braun
provided the know-how to put American astronauts on the moon and nuclear
warheads into space. Rudolph, according to reporter Linda Hunt, was guilty
of war crimes in WWII. "In 1969, Americans cheered as our astronauts took
their first steps onto the moon. The giant rocket that blasted them into
space was Rudolph's crowning achievement as NASA's project director for
Saturn V. Fifteen years later, Rudolph relinquished his U.S. citizenship and
left the country rather than face Justice Department charges that he had
committed war crimes while working in an underground factory that had used
Dora Concentration Camp prisoners as slave labor."
American's should find it a bit unsettling that their presence on the moon
and the space-based military dominance they enjoy was built, in good
measure, on the backs of 6,000 human beings who would ultimately be executed
by the Nazi SS in the Spring of 1945.
According to Hunt, exactly 40 years after the liberation of Dora, in April
1985, the Alabama Space and Rocket Museum paid tribute to 40 Germans who
stood surrounded by the press, in front of old V-2s and the Saturn V Rocket
they helped build for the United States. There is no monument to the Dora
Concentration Camp. Why? Americans do not wish to be reminded of what WWII
French Resistance leader, and Dora prisoner, Jean Michel said about the day
that U.S. astronauts first walked on the moon, "I could not watch the Apollo
mission without remembering that that triumphant walk was made possible by
our initiation to inconceivable horror."
Hitler's influence is everywhere in America.
Nazi Know-How and the CIA
Hitler's ghost occupies the hallowed ground of the US Central Intelligence
Agency. General Reinhard Gehlen was Hitler's top Soviet spy during WWII and
was recruited by Allen Dulles, the first director of the CIA. According to
Martin Lee, writing in the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Gehlen returned to
West Germany in the summer of 1946 with a mandate to rebuild his espionage
organization and resume spying on the East at the behest of American
intelligence. That date is significant as it preceded the onset of the Cold
War, which, according to standard U.S. historical accounts, did not begin
until a year later, according to Lee. The early courtship of Gehlen by
American intelligence suggests that Washington was in a Cold War mode sooner
than most people realize. The Gehlen gambit also belies the prevalent
Western notion that aggressive Soviet policies were primarily to blame for
triggering the Cold War.
Based near Munich, Gehlen proceeded to enlist thousands of Gestapo,
Wehrmacht, and SS veterans. Even the vilest of the vile the senior
bureaucrats who ran the central administrative apparatus of the Holocaust
were welcome in the "Gehlen Org," as it was called, including Alois Brunner,
Adolf Eichmann's chief deputy. SS major Emil Augsburg and Gestapo captain
Klaus Barbie, otherwise known as the "Butcher of Lyon," were among those who
did double duty for Gehlen and U.S. intelligence, indicated Lee.
Sympathy for Ford's Devil
Hitler's ghost is present in the assembly lines of America's automotive
manufacturers. It's amusing listening to the Ford advertising campaign that
features the Rolling Stones song, Start Me Up. More appropriate, it seems,
would be the Stone's classic recording of Sympathy for the Devil. From 1939
to 1942, Ford Motor Company produced thousands of combat vehicles for the
Nazi's at its Cologne, Germany production facility reaping enormous profits
that would ultimately be used to design the next-generation of Ford's driven
by Americans in the 1950's. During the height of WWII, Ford shipped raw
materials from America to the Cologne plant to ensure that production would
not be interrupted by Allied bombing and that Hitler would remain a happy
customer. According to Ken Silverstein, Ford vehicles were crucial to the
revolutionary Nazi military strategy of blitzkrieg. Of the 350,000 trucks
used by the motorized German Army as of 1942, roughly one-third were Ford
products. Imagine the surprise of American troops when they saw the
enemy--the Wehrmacht-driving around in Ford vehicles. "They were
understandably an unpleasant sight to men in the US Army," reported
Silverstein.
IBM received lucrative contracts from the Nazi's to build databases that
would be used to determine population demographics and track down Jews,
Christians and other threats to the Nazi Party. Profits from those efforts,
like Ford's were sent home to America to perform research and development
for new profit-making technologies. It's the same story for General Motors,
Kodak, Dupont, and General Electric (owner of NBC news).
Who Won WWII?

opting to be a member of the storm-trooping "Brown Shirts" who eagerly

Bush II in the White House, the American Nazi Party, the Aryan Nations and
other despicable hate groups have received an unintended acknowledgement
that their hateful struggle on behalf of the "white race" has merit.
And why shouldn't they when their government officials and so-called leaders
tacitly sanction ethnic cleansing, demean Islam and Arabs or strive to
eliminate the civil rights gains of minorities and same-sex groups.
It's no surprise to find Hitler's ghost in the offices of Senator Trent Lott
who said of white supremacist Senator Strom Thurmond-an opponent of
integration and civil rights in the 1960's-- "When Strom Thurmond ran for
president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the
country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over
all these years." Hitler's ghost visits the House side in the offices of
Representative Tom Delay, an avowed Christian Zionist, who advocates the
ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians by Israel and is a proponent of the
Security Fence, while at the same time admonishing those who will listen to
him to "stand unashamedly for Jesus Christ".
And in the Pentagon, Hitler's ideology, has a friend in the form of US
Marine Corps Lieutenant General William Boykin who believes that "God
supports the US military because we're a Christian nation, because our
foundation and our roots are Judeo-Christian...Our spiritual enemy will only
be defeated if we come against them in the name of Jesus."
That what the Aryan Nation says too. They proclaim that they have God's
support. Like all God-fearing Nazi's, they hope "To ordain, establish, and
pledge our fidelity to our Aryan Racial Nation, under the Law of God, the
uniting of our individual strength as a united lawful power, for the
preservation and total independence from all alien influence and control
over our Faith, Children, and Destiny. "

Hollerith punch card system, which was a VERY long way from being a
'database' (a phrase not used until 1963). There weren't even
programmable computers in the 40s.

Well, depends on what you mean by programmable. The first programmers were
almost all women, hired because of their experience as telephone operators.
Computers were programmed by rewiring modules using the same skills as a
telephone operator. The more dextrous the operator, the faster programmer
she made. Once the computers became programmable in the more modern sense of
the word, many of the early programmers stayed on to become the pioneers of
that generation of computer too so there was a large percentage of female
programmers for many years before it became a male geek haven.

and outdated, let me say this clearly: The first, best, and most
suitable place for the women is in the family, and her most glorious
duty is to give children to her people and nation, children who can

the nation. The woman is the teacher of the youth, and therefore the
builder of the foundation of the future. If the family is the nation's
source of strength, the woman is its core and center. The best place
for the woman to serve her people is in her marriage, in the family,
in motherhood. This is her highest mission. That does not mean that
those women who are employed or who have no children have no role in
the motherhood of the German people. They use their strength, their
abilities, their sense of responsibility for the nation, in other
ways. We are convinced, however, that the first task of a socially
reformed nation must be to again give the woman the possibility to
fulfill her real task, her mission in the family and as a mother.
The national revolutionary government is everything but reactionary.
It does not want to stop the pace of our rapidly moving age. It has no
intention of lagging behind the times. It wants to be the flag bearer
and pathfinder of the future. We know the demands of the modern age.
But that does not stop us from seeing that every age has its roots in
motherhood, that there is nothing of greater importance than the
living mother of a family who gives the state children.
German women have been transformed in recent years. They are beginning
to see that they are not happier as a result of being given more
rights but fewer duties. They now realize that the right to be elected
to public office at the expense of the right to life, motherhood and
her daily bread is not a good trade.
A characteristic of the modern era is a rapidly declining birthrate in
our big cities. In 1900 two million babies were born in Germany. Now
the number has fallen to one million. This drastic decline is most
evident in the national capital. In the last fourteen years, Berlin's
birthrate has become the lowest of any European city. By 1955, without
emigration, it will have only about three million inhabitants. The
government is determined to halt this decline of the family and the
resulting impoverishment of our blood. There must be a fundamental
change. The liberal attitude toward the family and the child is
responsible for Germany's rapid decline. We today must begin worrying
about an aging population. In 1900 there were seven children for each
elderly person, today it is only four. If current trends continue, by

Here are some quotes from the account of the women's rally at the 1936
Nuremberg Rally, taken from the official party proceedings. The
speakers were Gertrud Scholz-Klink, the head of the Nazi women's
league, and Hitler himself, who outlines the Nazi view of the role of
women.
The enormous hall was filled two hours before the meeting began. Many
thousands of women were unable to enter, and gathered outside to hear
the proceedings over loudspeakers. The leaders of the women's labor
service and those of the League of German Girls took their places on
the platform, and the officials of the NS Women's League and the
German Women's Work filled the seats. To the side one could see
numerous representatives of German women's groups from abroad in
colorful and elaborate costumes. The farmers among the participants
also wore their beautiful traditional costumes. After a piece by the
Reich Symphony Orchestra, Hilgenfeldt opened the meeting and greeted
the participants and foreign guests in the name of the National
Women's Leader. The 20,000 women rose to sing "Our Fate was to be a

"The Soviet Union declared the legal equality of men and women in all
areas in a law of 18 November 1918. That meant the same right to work,
the same duty to support oneself, the right of control over one's own
body, which for the woman meant the right to abortion. The view was
that men and women had full freedom only when the state stayed as far
as possible form personal relationships. The state provided no legal
rights in marriage, which meant that there were only two forms of
marriage. One could register a marriage before a government office, or
one could be married without virtue of state ceremony.
The result was that, even when one had been married officially, the
individual partners had the right when they were unhappy to go to the
same office and, for a very small fee, dissolve the marriage. Should
there be children, they would be housed in collective homes, since
both father and mother worked and housing was in short supply, given
the migration from the countryside to the cities. The absence of
resources in such homes led of necessity to demanding money from the
economically stronger partner. The result was constant legal battles
and enormous misery for the children.
Simultaneously, women were increasingly absorbed in industry and the
military. In 1918, 24 of every 1000 miners were women. By 1932, 153 of
1000 were women, a number that had grown to 321 by 1935! In automobile
and tractor manufacturing, women are 30.4% of the work force, 63.5% of
the drilling industry.
The full equality of the sexes had the further result that girls are
given the same military training as boys in the communist youth
organization and schools. The Red Army is the only army in the world
in which both men and women are trained as soldiers and officers to
wage aggressive wars...
We Germans had 14 years under an attempt to impose Bolshevist
principles on us. The German woman took her place alongside the German
man when she realized that a struggle was going on between God's order
for earthly affairs and universal apostles of humanity who wanted to
replace these eternal laws. It was a battle between good and evil.
Good and evil are equally strong forces in life. They find visible
form in National Socialism and Bolshevism. National Socialism is good
become visible for we Germans. It respects the earth from which our

Here it is 2003, and the ghost of the notorious Nazi Adolph Hitler haunts
America.
He's in the White House in Washington, DC and the governor's mansion in
Sacramento, California.
He roams the halls of the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in
Huntsville, Alabama. His Nazi minions Arthur Rudolph and Werner Von Braun
provided the know-how to put American astronauts on the moon and nuclear
warheads into space. Rudolph, according to reporter Linda Hunt, was guilty
of war crimes in WWII. "In 1969, Americans cheered as our astronauts took
their first steps onto the moon. The giant rocket that blasted them into
space was Rudolph's crowning achievement as NASA's project director for
Saturn V. Fifteen years later, Rudolph relinquished his U.S. citizenship and
left the country rather than face Justice Department charges that he had
committed war crimes while working in an underground factory that had used
Dora Concentration Camp prisoners as slave labor."
American's should find it a bit unsettling that their presence on the moon
and the space-based military dominance they enjoy was built, in good
measure, on the backs of 6,000 human beings who would ultimately be executed
by the Nazi SS in the Spring of 1945.
According to Hunt, exactly 40 years after the liberation of Dora, in April
1985, the Alabama Space and Rocket Museum paid tribute to 40 Germans who
stood surrounded by the press, in front of old V-2s and the Saturn V Rocket
they helped build for the United States. There is no monument to the Dora
Concentration Camp. Why? Americans do not wish to be reminded of what WWII
French Resistance leader, and Dora prisoner, Jean Michel said about the day
that U.S. astronauts first walked on the moon, "I could not watch the Apollo
mission without remembering that that triumphant walk was made possible by
our initiation to inconceivable horror."
Hitler's influence is everywhere in America.
Nazi Know-How and the CIA
Hitler's ghost occupies the hallowed ground of the US Central Intelligence
Agency. General Reinhard Gehlen was Hitler's top Soviet spy during WWII and
was recruited by Allen Dulles, the first director of the CIA. According to
Martin Lee, writing in the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Gehlen returned to
West Germany in the summer of 1946 with a mandate to rebuild his espionage
organization and resume spying on the East at the behest of American
intelligence. That date is significant as it preceded the onset of the Cold
War, which, according to standard U.S. historical accounts, did not begin
until a year later, according to Lee. The early courtship of Gehlen by
American intelligence suggests that Washington was in a Cold War mode sooner
than most people realize. The Gehlen gambit also belies the prevalent
Western notion that aggressive Soviet policies were primarily to blame for
triggering the Cold War.
Based near Munich, Gehlen proceeded to enlist thousands of Gestapo,
Wehrmacht, and SS veterans. Even the vilest of the vile the senior
bureaucrats who ran the central administrative apparatus of the Holocaust
were welcome in the "Gehlen Org," as it was called, including Alois Brunner,
Adolf Eichmann's chief deputy. SS major Emil Augsburg and Gestapo captain
Klaus Barbie, otherwise known as the "Butcher of Lyon," were among those who
did double duty for Gehlen and U.S. intelligence, indicated Lee.
Sympathy for Ford's Devil
Hitler's ghost is present in the assembly lines of America's automotive
manufacturers. It's amusing listening to the Ford advertising campaign that
features the Rolling Stones song, Start Me Up. More appropriate, it seems,
would be the Stone's classic recording of Sympathy for the Devil. From 1939
to 1942, Ford Motor Company produced thousands of combat vehicles for the
Nazi's at its Cologne, Germany production facility reaping enormous profits
that would ultimately be used to design the next-generation of Ford's driven
by Americans in the 1950's. During the height of WWII, Ford shipped raw
materials from America to the Cologne plant to ensure that production would
not be interrupted by Allied bombing and that Hitler would remain a happy
customer. According to Ken Silverstein, Ford vehicles were crucial to the
revolutionary Nazi military strategy of blitzkrieg. Of the 350,000 trucks
used by the motorized German Army as of 1942, roughly one-third were Ford
products. Imagine the surprise of American troops when they saw the
enemy--the Wehrmacht-driving around in Ford vehicles. "They were
understandably an unpleasant sight to men in the US Army," reported
Silverstein.
IBM received lucrative contracts from the Nazi's to build databases that
would be used to determine population demographics and track down Jews,
Christians and other threats to the Nazi Party. Profits from those efforts,
like Ford's were sent home to America to perform research and development
for new profit-making technologies. It's the same story for General Motors,
Kodak, Dupont, and General Electric (owner of NBC news).
Who Won WWII?

eliminate the civil rights gains of minorities and same-sex groups.
It's no surprise to find Hitler's ghost in the offices of Senator Trent Lott
who said of white supremacist Senator Strom Thurmond-an opponent of
integration and civil rights in the 1960's-- "When Strom Thurmond ran for
president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the
country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over
all these years." Hitler's ghost visits the House side in the offices of
Representative Tom Delay, an avowed Christian Zionist, who advocates the
ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians by Israel and is a proponent of the
Security Fence, while at the same time admonishing those who will listen to
him to "stand unashamedly for Jesus Christ".
And in the Pentagon, Hitler's ideology, has a friend in the form of US
Marine Corps Lieutenant General William Boykin who believes that "God
supports the US military because we're a Christian nation, because our
foundation and our roots are Judeo-Christian...Our spiritual enemy will only
be defeated if we come against them in the name of Jesus."
That what the Aryan Nation says too. They proclaim that they have God's
support. Like all God-fearing Nazi's, they hope "To ordain, establish, and
pledge our fidelity to our Aryan Racial Nation, under the Law of God, the
uniting of our individual strength as a united lawful power, for the
preservation and total independence from all alien influence and control
over our Faith, Children, and Destiny. "

Creator," said Adolf Hitler.

instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did. With the might of God on our

NEW YORK (AP) Attorney General John Ashcroft vowed Friday that the
Justice Department would continue its fight against anti-Semitism and
terrorism.
"This administration believes that acts of anti-Semitism must be
confronted, condemned and denounced," Ashcroft said in a keynote
address at the Anti-Defamation League's national meeting.
"As history shows, verbal attacks on the Jewish people are portends of
more savage criminality to come," he added...
Ashcroft also spoke at length about the benefits of the USA Patriot
Act, passed overwhelmingly by Congress after Sept. 11. It greatly
expanded the government's surveillance and detention powers, and the
attorney general said without the legislation, some people indicted
for terrorism-related offenses might not have been detected by
officials.
Ashcroft spoke on the second day of the three-day conference,
celebrating the ADL's 90th anniversary. The ADL was founded in 1913 by
Chicago lawyer Sigmund Livingston, who saw a need for an organization
to protect Jews from anti-Semitic acts.
Abraham Foxman, the ADL's national director, praised Ashcroft and
President Bush for their efforts in fighting anti-Semitism...

and official publications...." Thanks, G.W. It's good to know
what your priorities are. Can you imagine Bush or Powell or
Giuliani, as much as they hate free speech, ever calling for laws
to suppress criticism of White people or even of America? It's
not going to happen. Forget it. Yet, in the hushed tones usually
reserved for sacred words spoken in church, they piously intone
that words critical of Jews be eliminated or made illegal. They
intone these words at international conferences, paid for by you
the taxpayers, called into session specifically for the purpose
of ending criticism of Jews. How much more obvious does it have
to be, dear listeners? Powell and Bush and Giuliani have given us
such a crystal clear example of Jewish power over our "leaders"
that even the most dense should be able to 'get it.'
Do you think that the OSCE delegates were mainly concerned with
stopping physical attacks on Jews and not on suppressing freedom
of speech? Think again. The Dutch delegate to the conference,
Daan Everts, specifically cited "[racist] music [and] racist
slogans" -- slogans! -- as 'problems' to be addressed by new
laws.
And Israel's chief representative at the conference, Avraham
Toledo, specifically called on member governments to make
'anti-Semitism' a criminal offense. That's where they are going
with this. It can't possibly be any more obvious. A more chilling
nightmare scenario could not have been penned by a science
fiction author characterizing the Jews as a parasitic alien
species who have invaded us and taken over the ruling class in
our societies, and who are slowly programming us to kill or
imprison any 'rebels' who question the new ruling class, worship
of which is gradually being introduced in our schools and
churches as a pseudo-religion to cement their power over us.

It's interesting that the Bush administration withdrew its
delegates from the UN-sponsored 'World Conference Against Racism'
held in South Africa in 2001 when it was discovered that Jews
would be criticized for their treatment of Palestinians there.
But they enthusiastically endorse -- with the participation of
Powell, Giuliani, and even Bush himself -- this conference in
Vienna in which the entire focus is criminalizing criticism of
Jews and Jews alone. Clearly, our captured rulers have no problem
with the concept of conferences on racism. But conferences that
criticize Jews, however mildly, are verboten. And conferences
that denounce critics of Jews and Israel are national and
international priorities. It's Jewish interests that are their
driving force at all places and at all times. Jewish interests.
Not American interests. Not White interests. Any people so
betrayed by its own alleged leaders will not long survive on
Earth.
On June 18th, Giuliani stated that when people characterize Jews
"in inhumane ways, and make salacious statements in parliaments
or the press" about Jews, they are "attacking the defining values
of our societies and our international institutions."
Just as he did in the United States a few years ago, Giuliani
went on to call for special punishment for anyone in Europe found
to have violated his proposed 'hate crime' laws, punishment far
more severe than for similar offenses when the motivation was not
found to be dislike of Jews. He specifically justified this
unequal punishment of those who criticize Jews on the basis that
crimes against Jews are "particularly heinous." Crimes against
Englishmen, crimes against Italians, crimes against Frenchmen,
crimes against Americans -- well, they're just crimes. Crimes
against Jews require special punishment. They're "particularly
heinous." Conferences must be held and new laws must be passed.

as he tells us what the real function of law should be in a
'good' society of obedient goyim: "Yes, some will argue that hate
crimes need not be punished more harshly than similar crimes
committed for different reasons. But the fact is that extra
penalties are used throughout civilized legal systems - in Europe
as well as America - as a way to distinguish acts that are
particularly heinous. One of the functions of the law is to
teach, to draw lines between what's permissible and what's
forbidden."

Schools must look at how they educate children regarding
tolerance and fairness. Universities, public officials,
advertisers and the news media should publicize the tremendous
contributions that Jews have made to European societies through
the years."
Giuliani states that his purpose with regard to the rising
awareness of Jewish power and Jewish crimes in Europe is to see
that this increased consciousness is 'turned around.' I quote
from his June 13 address at the State department after accepting
the OSCE 'commission': "Coming from New York City and having had
the experience of being mayor of the world's most diverse city,
you learn... the value of having a focus on hate crimes and hate
incidents.... And then focusing your attention on those places in
which you have to educate people or you have to deal with people
who are wrongdoers. And the fact that this organization is giving
attention to this at this level, I think is a very positive sign
that we will be able to deal with it at this stage and start to
turn it in the right direction."

It's clear that Rudy Giuliani's political ambitions are far from
over. His brown-nosing of the Jews has reached a fever pitch. We
can expect the same from ambitious politicians like Hilary
Clinton and many others as 2004 approaches. Elections in the
United States have become more and more contests between cynical
lying hacks who compete for favorable media coverage by trying to
be more subservient to the Jews and to Israel than the next
cynical lying hack. This guarantees them good coverage and more
votes from the unthinking victims of media manipulation. The
Semitically Sycophantic rhetoric will be more heated than ever in
future elections, as it takes extreme statements to compete for
the Jews' favor with George W., who was willing to slaughter
Arabs and Americans by the thousands for them.
But, as the ambitions and the actions of the Jews become more
extreme, the awareness they are trying to suppress will start to
bloom all over Europe, all over North America, and everywhere
where they have set up their criminal conspiracy to harness our
people for their evil ends and to eventually eradicate our race
from the face of the Earth. That's the historical pattern. Jews
gain power in a society, abuse that power through arrogance and
hate, and eventually the oppressed people expel their oppressors.
But this time, the process is not limited to one country like
20th century Germany or 15th century Spain. The process is now
global. And, as we and the other peoples of the Earth realize
that our mutual needs for self-determination and for freedom from
Jewish domination coincide, the days of the Jewish cryptocracy
will be numbered.
Instead of a government that serves Jewish interests above all,
and serves other minority interests as long as they don't
conflict with Jewish interests, we must have a government that
serves White interests. Under such a government, our labor and
our tax dollars and our blood would be expended only when they

Ionospheric research facilities have been in continuous
use since the 1950's to investigate fundamental physical
principles which govern the earth's ionosphere, so that
present and future transmission technologies may take
into account the complexities of the ionosphere.
At the present time the US operates two ionospheric
research sites, one in Puerto Rico, near the Arecibo
Observatory, and the other (known as HIPAS) in Alaska
near Fairbanks. Both of these employ active and passive
radio instrumentation similar to that being built at
HAARP. Interest in the ionosphere is not limited to the
US: a five-country consortium operates the European
Incoherent Scatter Radar site (EISCAT), a premier
world-class ionospheric research facility located in
northern Norway near Tromsø. Facilities also are located
at Jicamarca, Peru; near Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod ("SURA")
and Apatity, Russia; near Kharkov, Ukraine and in
Dushanbe, Tadzhikistan. All of these installations have
as their primary purpose the study of the ionosphere, and
most employ the capability of stimulating to a varying
degree small, localized regions of the ionosphere in
order to study methodically, and in a detailed manner
what nature produces randomly and regularly on a much
larger scale.
What is the Value of Ionospheric Research?

The ionosphere begins approximately 35 miles above the
earth's surface and extends out beyond 500 miles.
In contrast to the dense atmosphere close to the earth,
which is composed almost entirely, of neutral gas, the
thin ionosphere contains both neutral gas and a small
number of charged particles known as ions and electrons.
This ionized medium can distort, reflect and absorb
radio signals, and thus can affect numerous civilian and
military communications, navigation, surveillance and
remote sensing systems in many varied ways. For example,
the performance of a satellite-to-ground communication
link is affected by the ionosphere through which the
signals pass. AM broadcast programs, which in the daytime
can be heard only within a few tens of miles from the
station, at night sometimes can be heard hundreds of
miles away, due to the change from poor daytime to good
nighttime reflection from the ionosphere. A long-range
HF communication link which uses multiple hops or
reflections from the ionosphere and ground, often
experiences amplitude fading caused by interference
between signals which have traveled from the
transmitter to the receiver by two (or more) different
ionospheric paths.
Since the sun's radiation creates and maintains the
ionosphere, sudden variations in this radiation such as
those caused by solar flares can affect the performance
of radio systems. Sometimes these natural changes are
sufficient to induce large transient currents in electric
power transmission grids, causing widespread power
outages. Lightning is known to cause substantial heating
and ionization density enhancement in the lower
ionosphere, and there are indications that ground-based
HF transmitters, including radars and strong radio
stations, also modify the ionosphere and influence the
performance of systems whose radio paths traverse the
modified region. Perhaps the most famous example of the
latter is the "Luxembourg" effect, first observed in 1933.
In this case a weak Swiss radio station appeared to be
modulated with signals from the powerful Luxembourg station,
which was transmitting at a completely different frequency.
Music from the Luxembourg station was picked up at the
frequency of the Swiss station.
The continual growth in the number of civilian and military
satellite systems whose performance depends on paths passing
through the ionosphere, encourages not only good
characterization and monitoring of the ionospheric state,
but also an examination of what controlled local modification
of the ionosphere, using ground HF transmitters, could do for
and to these systems. Thus, while the HAARP facility is
expected to provide significant advancements in understanding
ionospheric science by stimulating and controlling plasma
processes in a tiny localized region within the ionosphere,
it also has the potential for significantly affecting the
planning for future satellite communication and navigation
systems through improvements in reliability and economics.

The Antimatter Factory

Over the past 20 years scientists at CERN have been using
antiparticles in many different ways for their daily work.
Antiparticles can be generated by colliding subatomic
particles. Before being delivered to the various physics
experiments, they must be isolated, collected and stored in
order to tune their energy to the appropriate level.
Until now, each of these steps has been carried out by a
dedicated machine with the main purpose of providing high
energy antiparticles.
But now the first "self-contained
ntiproton factory",
the Antiproton Decelerator (or AD), is operational at CERN .
It will produce the low energy antiprotons needed for a range
of studies, including the synthesis of antihydrogen atoms - the
creation of antimatter.

The AD experiments
Three experiments are installed in the Antiproton Decelerator's
experimental hall:
ASACUSA "Atomic Spectroscopy and Collisions using
Slow Antiprotons";
ATHENA "Antihydrogen Production and Precision Experiments" and
ATRAP "Cold Antihydrogen for Precise Laser Spectroscopy".
ATHENA and ATRAP's goal is to produce antihydrogen in traps,
by combining antiprotons delivered by the AD with positrons
emitted by a radioactive source.
Antihydrogen atoms were first observed at CERN in 1995, and
later (1997) at Fermilab. In both cases they were produced in
flight, that means they moved at nearly the speed of light, i.e.
much too fast to allow precise measurements on any of their
proprieties! They made unique electrical signals in detectors
that destroyed them almost immediately after they formed.
Now the idea is to produce slow antihydrogen atoms and store
them into "traps", allowing extremely accurate comparisons of
the properties of hydrogen and antihydrogen.
ASACUSA, on the other hand, will synthesize "exotic" atoms,
in which an electron is replaced by an antiproton. Precise laser
spectroscopy of these exotic atoms is expected to reveal lots of
information on the behavior of atomic systems.

ASACUSA stands for Atomic Spectroscopy And Collisions Using
Antiprotons; spelt with a 'k' (as Asakusa) it is the name of
one of the oldest quarters of Tokyo (and there are a lot of
Japanese physicists in the collaboration!) This experiment will
build antiprotonic helium atoms and will study them using laser
spectroscopy techniques.
Why, and what is an antiprotonic helium atom?
A normal atom of helium consists of two electrons orbiting
around the nucleus. If you replace one electron with an
antiproton, you obtain antiprotonic helium.
Such atoms are extremely easy to create -- it is enough just
to bring fast-moving antiprotons to rest in ordinary helium.
The stationary antiprotons readily displace electrons from
neighboring helium atoms, and remain bound in their place,
traveling around the helium nucleus in a slightly elliptical
orbit. In most of the atoms, once this situation in reached,
the antiproton falls into the nucleus so fast (a trillionth
of a second!) that scientist have not time to do anything!
But antiprotonic helium is special, and sometime (about 3% of
the cases) its atoms can live up to several millionths of a
second, a time long enough for scientist to look at it carefully.
And since the properties of any atom are determined by the
properties of its constituent particles, this unusual atom
constitutes an extremely powerful microscope through which the
antiproton can be studied in minute detail.
The way ASACUSA measures the properties of antiprotonic helium
atoms is by the powerful and accurate tools of laser spectroscopy.
What is laser spectroscopy?
If you could look at the fall of the antiproton into the nucleus,
you would see that is not "direct", but more like "descending a
stair": it goes through the different "steps" defined by the
energy levels of the atom. The study of the transitions between
energy levels, that involve the absorption or emission of light,
is called spectroscopy.
Now, one of the main goals of ASACUSA is to measure exactly the
"height of each step", i.e. the energy between levels.
One way to do it is to have the antiproton "jump" in a controlled
way. How to convince it?
The principle of "laser spectroscopy" is to induce such jumps by
a laser pulse. Only by tuning the laser "light" (= energy) to
exactly the height of a step, the antiprotons can be made to jump.
If one gets the jump, he will know the energy looking at the laser
light which caused it!
ASACUSA physicists are planing to use, to this purpose, two beams
of laser light and a pulsed beam of microwaves. With the latter,
they hope to induce "mini-jumps" and reach the so called "hyperfine
energy levels ".
Spectroscopic studies on the hydrogen atoms led to crucial
understanding of matter and its components. In a similar way,
the spectroscopy of "antiprotonic atoms" allows the study of
the electrical and magnetic properties of the antiproton to
extremely high precision, and permits to compare them with
those of ordinary protons.
Several other detailed studies, both on the interactions of
antiprotons with different materials and on the interactions
of p-He+ with surrounding atoms and molecules, will be performed
by ASACUSA in the next years.
