Fanatical Imams: Group Preaches hatred in Dutch Mosques
Dagblad Trouw, June 14 2002
AMSTERDAM - A group of fanatical imams preaches violence and glorify
martyrdom in mosques in the Netherlands. Minister De Vries from
Internal Affairs wants the DA-office to start and investigation.
Nova (Dutch newsprogram) aired recordings from Friday sermons in
mosques in The Hague, Rotterdam, Tilburg and Amsterdam.
The Syrian imam J. Fawaz said in the Assoenah-mosque in The Hague: "If
the United Nations says that everyone is the same, then I say: no.
Muslims are better than other people. Also the laws of the UN that are
the opposite of islam are heathen laws that must be oblitterated." The
UN is regarded as a very anti-islamic organization amongst the
extremists.
On the American president Bush and the Israeli prime-minister Sharon
Fawaz says: "Destroy them for their sins." He also preaches: "Give
your blessing to the mujahideen in Palestina, Kashmir, Chechnya,
Afghanistan and the Phillipines." The imam Mahmoud El Shershaby, of
Egyptian origine, comments about suicide bombings: "He who sacrifice
themselves to Allah this way, is a martyr."
It has not been proven te imams incite to the use violence. But a
spokesman from the AIVD (Dutch security organization) says: "These
kind of texts create the foundation on which the recrutement for armed
islamic war is based on." Minister De Vries commented: "A few messages
is full of political incentives to call for hate. I think that people
(muslims) need to look to their people and see what is being preached.
The islamic community has got to say: this is what we don't want. That
has to happen now."
Some of the invloved mosques draw hundereds of people, amongst them
many youths. A number of imams are member of the committee that takes
seat at the foundation El-Tawheed in Amsterdam. El Shershaby is it's
chairman. That same foundation already came into view for it's
extremism.
Radical Imams Preach martyrdom
De Volkskrant, June 14 2002, by Iņaki Oņorbe Genovesi
'Woman are allowed to go to the mosque and do groceries. But they must
realize that is all, they must realize that they need to do the work
at home.' Imam Jnied Fawaz of the As Soenah mosque in The Hague is
confident. Woman musn't come out of the house too often. 'There will
come only trouble out of them going outside.'
But muslimyouths must also be watched closely. They only speak about
integration and going to discos. This is all wrong, according to
Fawaz, who is already ten years in the Netherlands. Young people
musn't be allowed to listen to music, but they need to learn Arabic or
read the koran. 'There must be the creation of places where woman and
youths keep themselves to islamic rules. Places were muslims can
fullful in their own needs.' And for Westerns there is no room there,
according to Fawaz.
Minister De Vries of Internal Affairs and mayor of The Hague, Deetman,
asked the DA-office to investigate radical imams like Fawaz. Two
programs from Nova, that made soundrecordings for months during Friday
sermons. During those sermons, the imans displayed fierce anti-Western
thoughts, called the listeners to beat their wives and plead for
islamic 'parks' in the Netherlands.
These radical imams are united in the Foundation Islamic Committee for
Ahl-Soennah in Europe, seated in Amsterdam with the mosque El Tawheed,
who already was criticized for it's extremism. Also they are regualy
meetings in their, mostly visited by Moroccans, mosques Essalam
(Rotterdam), Ar Rahman (Amsterdam) and imam Fawaz' As Soenah-mosque in
The Hague.
Fawaz (37) confirms the foundation excists. This foundation was
founded in March 2001 to help muslims in the Netherlands with their
problems, for example between men and their wives. In reality the
foundation is also political active. Thursday evening they could be
clearly heard in the Nova broadcast how imams also preached violence
and martyrdom.
For a moment Fawaz lets the question if he is pioliticly active run
through his head. Than his laughter is heard throughout the As
Soenah-mosque. 'Of course, now politics are needed the most. Bush is
trying to portray muslims as black sheep. Against this we must acts.
Muslims will not be turned into slaves.'
Don't misunderstand the imam. He will not call for the use of
violence. 'I cannot ask muslimyouths in the Netherlands to go and help
their brothers in Palestina. By doing so they will also called
refugees and criminals. And above all, islam does not ask it's
believers to get killed.'
But Fawaz warns for the 'invisible hand that tries portray islam as
bad'. They need to be taken care of with sturdiness. Why? Fawaz
seriously says: 'Nothing may be of threat to islam.'
Imam Fawaz comments on the accusations
tNOS Teletext
Imam Fawaz from the Assoennah-mosque in The Hague says not to
comprehand why there was so much commotion about his preaches that
where aired Thursday in the newsprogram Nova. He was saying that he
was calling to Allah to eleminate the enemies of islam. The Dutch
government reacted shocked.
Nova Thursday aired how radical imams in The Hague, Rotterdam, Tilburg
and Amsterdam called for jihad ('holy war') and said that muslim males
could beat their wive. Fawaz defended himself on Friday in the same
newsprogram.
"My words are always based on the assumption that I live in a society
were all possible opinions are allowed. If laws are differet or are
being used different, let them tell us this, so I can see just how far
my freedom reaches", according to the imam.
Expulsion
CDA, VVD and LPF, that currently negociate about forming a
coalition-government, reacted indignant about the program
Thursdayevening. CDA leader Balkenende says the imams preachings are
'not acceptable'. LPF leader Herben goes further: "Such imams need to
be deported. If that is not possible with the current laws, we will
make it possible."
VVD Chambermember Rijpstra and D66 Chambermember Dittrich that mosques
where these kind of preaches are made, can be temporary closed. If
needed the imams could be deported. "The working- or stayingvisas of
such people who are guilty of breaking Dutchs laws needs to be
revoked", according to Rijpstra.
De Telegraaf adds:
"If an imam breaks the law, he can get a one-way ticket back to Syria
or Saudi Arabia, if you ask us. The majority of the muslimcommunity
will also not approve of their behavior", according to LPF leader
Herben. CDA leader Balkenede thinks that deportation will not solve
the problem, because the imams will continue their harmful actions
elsewhere.
Because a likewise lawsuit against the imam from a mosque in
Rotterdam, El Moumni, became a total failure, there is not much
believe in a new lawsuit. El Moumni, who said in his preachings that
homosexuals are 'creatures lower than dogs or pigs', was recently
acquitted from charges against him because these comments were made in
the context of freedom of religion.
Manifestation Milli Gours in Arnhem
Spits, June 15 2002
ARNHEM (ANP) The Turkish Islamic organization Milli Gorus came
together on Saturday for the yearly European manifestation in the
Gelderdome in Arnhem.
Milli Gorus has close ties to the in Turkey outlawed Islamic
Welfareparty of N. Ernakan. Erbakan has been forbidden to be
politicial acitve in Turkey for it's fundamental views. Erbakan is
also present in Arnhem and wil adress the crowd.
About 20.000 people, coming from all over Europe, gathered in the
stadium. In 1998 there was a manifestation in the filled to capacity
Amsterdam Arena where 40.000 people attended. In contrast to last
year, the organization did not announce the meeting in public, at
least not in the media. It has ot been clarified why there were no
announcement made.
