Object: New abuse detail hits Bush defence of Rumsfeld
According to Senator Lindsay Graham, a Republican, the US public will
have to brace for cases of "murder and rape" from the scandal.
Members of Congress from both parties are increasingly insistent that
more senior members of the military and the administration must be
held responsible.
Graham told NBC television "we just don't want a bunch of privates and
sergeants to be the scapegoats here, and I don't want any political
person to be the scapegoat."
Lawmakers have also demanded the release of all the pictures and
videos seized as evidence in the investigation.
Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Senator John Warner said the
Pentagon had agreed photos and videos will be made available to
Congress members but they will remain classified.
Rumsfeld said the images are "hard to believe".
"If there are more photos out there detailing abuse ... for God's sake
let's talk about it, because men and women's lives are at stake given
how we've handled this," Graham said.
"One thing I know about scandals: They go on and on and on until the
American people feel they have a full and complete picture of what
happened," said Senator John McCain, a Republican former prisoner of
war in Vietnam, said as he demanded full disclosure on "Fox News
Sunday".
Democratic Senator Carl Levin said the photos "absolutely" should be
released to the public. "Any effort to hide this kind of material will
not work."

New abuse detail hits administration defence of Rumsfeld
WASHINGTON :
New revelations of abuse of Iraqi prisoners increased pressure on the
US administration as top officials expressed support for embattled
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
Amidst predictions that cases of murder and rape will emerge, leading
lawmakers called for the release of all of the photos and videos of
abuse taken at the now-notorious Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad.
The New Yorker magazine released a new photo showing a naked prisoner
at Abu Ghraib cowering under threat from two US military dogs.
The magazine, which was among the first to publish images that have
caused an international scandal, said other pictures, taken by a
member of the 320th Military Police Battalion, showed the prisoner on
the floor with blood pouring from a wound.
The published picture shows a naked Iraqi man, leaning against a cell
door, with his hands clasped behind his neck, cowering in fear as two
German Shepherd dogs snarl at him.
"Another photograph is a closeup of the naked prisoner, from his waist
to his ankles, lying on the floor. On his right thigh is what appears
to be a bite or a deep scratch. There is another larger wound on his
left leg covered in blood," said the report.
Rumsfeld has admitted that many more pictures and at least two videos
that could worsen the scandal have been seized.
According to Senator Lindsay Graham, a Republican, the US public will
have to brace for cases of "murder and rape" from the scandal.
NBC television quoted army investigators as saying Abu Ghraib inmates
were physically abused, punched, slapped and kicked and that military
police jumped on their naked feet.
Investigators said a male MP guard had sex with a female prisoner,
according to the US network.
Time magazine, in its edition to be released this week, quoted a
former Abu Ghraib detainee Mohammad Unis Hassan as saying he regularly
saw a US guard having sex with an Iraqi woman prisoner near his cell.
Hassan was detained for looting a bank last July.
Defense Secretary Rumsfeld is at the eye of the political storm in
Washington over the scandal.
President George W. Bush has already scolded Rumsfeld for not bringing
the investigation to his attention before the pictures were first
published.
