New military "ray gun" |
I didn't believe this story while watching it on CNN today! They put
soldiers about 1 city block in front of this radar van. The soldiers
were throwing rocks, to similate a city riot. They turned the radar on
and they felt such intense heat that they ran away! Then a CNN reporter
got in front of the thing, because they told her it wouldn't hurt her.
She felt heat throughout her whole body too and started squealing from
it. They said it's done with 95 GHz high powered radar. This is nuts! It
reminds me of when they marched troops into a nuclear test site after a
bomb went off, to prove that they could fight after a nuclear strike,
then the troops got radiation sickness later, cancers and many of them
died. It's just crazy. I wouldn't set foot in front of one of these
things!
And what if they start using it covertly on people?

Ray gun makes targets feel as if they are on fire
POSTED: 12:42 p.m. EST, January 25, 2007
MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Georgia (AP) -- The military's new weapon is a ray
gun that shoots a beam that makes people feel as if they will catch
fire.
The technology is supposed to be harmless -- a non-lethal way to get
enemies to drop their weapons.
Military officials say it could save the lives of civilians and service
members in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.
The weapon is not expected to go into production until at least 2010,
but all branches of the military have expressed interest in it,
officials said. (Watch a demo of the ray gun Video)
During the first media demonstration of the weapon Wednesday, airmen
fired beams from a large dish antenna mounted atop a Humvee at people
pretending to be rioters and acting out other scenarios U.S. troops
might encounter.
The crew fired beams from more than 500 yards (455 meters) away, nearly
17 times the range of existing non-lethal weapons, such as rubber
bullets.
While the sudden, 130-degree Fahrenheit (54.44 Celsius) heat was not
painful, it was intense enough to make participants think their clothes
were about to ignite.
"This is one of the key technologies for the future," said Marine Col.
Kirk Hymes, director of the non-lethal weapons program that helped
develop the weapon. "Non-lethal weapons are important for the escalation
of force, especially in the environments our forces are operating in."
The system uses millimeter waves, which can penetrate only 1/64th of an
inch of skin, just enough to cause discomfort. By comparison, common
kitchen microwaves penetrate several inches of skin.
The millimeter waves cannot go through walls, but they can penetrate
most clothing, officials said. They refused to comment on whether the
waves can go through glass.
Two airmen and 10 reporters volunteered to be zapped with the beams,
which easily penetrated various layers of winter clothing.
The system was developed by the military, but the two devices being
evaluated were built by defense contractor Raytheon.
Airman Blaine Pernell, 22, said he could have used the system during his
four tours in Iraq, where he manned watchtowers around a base near
Kirkuk. He said Iraqis often pulled up and faked car problems so they
could scout U.S. forces.
"All we could do is watch them," he said. But if they had the ray gun,
troops "could have dispersed them."

I'm not sure you can use a pain beam covertly. =)
However, if those things get OK'd for police here in the US, kiss your

Microwave ovens work around 2.45 GHz.
Any metal will reflect 90 GHz.
You may need some eye protection, tinfoil with thick glasses should do.
I think normal safety glasses wil lalso severely attenuate 10GHz and higher,
a satellite dish behind a glass window gets very little.
If all else fails the dish they use can be made non-reflective by bombing it
with the right paint ;-)
It is all toys.

If you want to limit collateral damage and are, for example,
trying to root out rebels in an urban setting, then you could
more freely use non-lethal force.
But, as someone else mentioned, it isn't clear how easy it would
be to neutralize such an attack.

Sure are the ones that are killing us- reluctance to cause collateral
damage, and to 'root out' rebels from their fellow citizens- and then, if
using 'non-lethal' force, to properly care for the subjects, making sure
none of their rights in the warzone are infringed upon.
But, as someone else mentioned, it isn't clear how easy it would

It presupposes unarmed 'protestors'- seems more about political correctness

the
ME. There was also a bus that was melted into a ball. They were
saying these were the effects of the Ratheon ADS Gun (yeah, variable
power setting). I'll post it when I find the link.

Using non lethal force on the enemy is just stupid.
Kill them.
If you want to limit collateral damage and are, for example,
trying to root out rebels in an urban setting, then you could
more freely use non-lethal force.
But, as someone else mentioned, it isn't clear how easy it would
be to neutralize such an attack.
Be funny if the demonstrators threw up a reflective shield and it went
off into space, or against the guys using it.
Silly woman, that is why they always start with it set to "stun"
If need be the Cap'n will juast tell the operator to select "kill" and
POOF...
No more rioters...

I wouldn't set foot in front of one of these
things!
Yes, and it is totally wasted dollars, as the enemy crowd will simply
start
wearing tinfoil hats and clothing

No I do not work for them, but maybe it is owned by DOD?
LOL

Kill them.
That is why the great God Browning invented the Ma Deuce.
All Hail John Browning !
