Well now ... We The People have been DEMANDING big government
at least since FDR took office. Agency upon agency, bureaucracy
upon bureaucracy - local, state, federal. Big Bro and his wife
nanny State were supposed to kiss all our boo-boos and wipe our
little behinds so WE wouldn't need to be bothered with such stuff.
There's a price - bureaucratic paralysis. Too many players
involved, each trying to stake-out THEIR little bit of
territory. Can't get anything done without fifteen levels
of micro-managers signing-off on the deal ... and when
you need 'em there's always a few missing so nothing gets
done at all.
We asked for it - whether we realized it or not - and
we sure as hell GOT it.

Who is supposed to act in disasters such as these if not the federal
governemnet?
Who will act for the common good?
Whose job was it to ensure the levees were adequate?
The federal governemnt, and it failed, because various Administration
were too short-sighted to see the need to invest in our country's
infrastructure.
Do you think private business would have handled this differently,
motivated by greed?
Well, we've given that concept twenty five years. It doesn't work.
There needs to be an adequate balance between private business and the
state to insure that America can function at an optimal level.
But the idea of abolishing the federal government, or claiming it has
no place in a modern world is simply *****.
The neocons weakened to the federal governemnt to repudiate what it saw
as liberal excess.
In some cases they were right.
But no extreme political vision works.
And now we're paying the price.
