New Orleans mayor seeks Bush's help |

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said on Monday he plans to ask President
George W. Bush for help in supporting the city, which is quickly
running out of money, over the next three months. Bush, on his eighth
trip to Gulf Coast since it was devastated by Hurricane Katrina on
August 29, was to meet the mayor for dinner in New Orleans on Monday.
"I'm going to talk to him about what it's going to take to keep this
city going over the next three months and ask him to support us in the
short term," Nagin told reporters after meeting with his 17-member
"Bring Back New Orleans" commission at the city's Sheraton Hotel.
When asked if he would be asking Bush for financial support, Nagin did
not answer. Last week, Nagin said New Orleans would lay off about 40
percent of its city workers and warned of further belt-tightening if
it did not receive additional funding in the next couple of months.
Bush arrived in New Orleans on Monday for a two-day visit to the
region and will meet with local officials to show support for efforts
to rebuild the devastated area. The death toll from Hurricane Katrina
in Louisiana has now reached 1,021, according to state officials.
Bush will be joined at dinner by members of Nagin's commission. During
a nearly four-hour meeting on Monday, the commission discussed efforts
to help residents return to New Orleans and received updates on
everything from garbage removal to electricity and the water supply.
The mayor also defended his plan to build a casino zone near the
historic French Quarter, a move he later told reporters had received
mixed reactions from the public.
"We got better organized, we allowed people to kind of get some of the
issues on the table," Nagin said of the meeting, during which seven
subcommittees were formed to address issues such as education, urban
planning, and economic development.

As I said then, FEMA should have given New Orleans about $5 bil about a
month ago. FEMA writes the checks. FEMA has to be converted into an
auditor, not the boss. Blanco, Nagin and What's-his-bubba in Mississippi
are the bosses.
HOW the money is spent can be used to weight who gets how much money in
the future of the rebuild.

The money is Federal money not state money. The money should rebuild
federal infrastructure in the affected areas and then given to the
individuals who have suffered damage. Both state and local governments
have their own tax base. Let them spend their own money.

So the hurricane emptied out all the government bank accounts in
Louisiana? Have they no contingency funds? I know that NO was broke
before the Hurricane but I was un aware that the state was bankrupt as
well. They don seem to be having the same problems in Mississippi and
Alabama. That's right I forgot Mississippi and Alabama are Republican
states.

No, but it did wipe out a hell of a lot of property, including hundreds of
thousands of dollar evaluated, assessed, and regularly taxed homes and
businesses. And hey - speaking of businesses, not only can you not collect
property tax on property that isn't worth anything, you can't collect sales
tax on sales that aren't happening, or incomes that don't exist.
Duh. Damn, you're stupid.
They don seem to be having the same problems in Mississippi and
Alabama.
Of course they are - New Orleans has just been getting the lion's share of
media attention.
That's right I forgot Mississippi and Alabama are Republican states.
Loisiana is a Republican state. Over 60% Republican anyway.

State and loval government in Louisiana were broke before the
hurricane. There was no reserve.

The government of the state of Louisianan and the city of NO have been
Democrat for many years.

I know of no evidence of that. At any rate - there was a tax base where now
there is none to speak of. If they were broke before, they're thoroughly
fucked now.
There was no reserve.
Most municipalities have "no reserve".

You mean the "governor" not "the government". The state remains primarily
Republican - there's just a lot of Republicans who vote for Democrats.
Get used to it - those days are coming (back) nationally next year.

NO should declare bankruptcy. A federal trustee will come in and look
at the books and set things right.
