New Senate Republican Leaders are "Dumb" and "Dumber"
It's not a good time to be a Senate Republican.
After losing their majority despite their 50-50 tie-breaking advantage
resulting from Cheney, they have just voted in a pair of dolts for
their top leaders.
Let's start with the big news for the day:
Trent Lott was voted Whip, the #2 leadership position.
Here is a guy whose Macaca Moment came four years ago next month,
which caused him to lose his rank of Senate leader (to Bill Frist no
less, who is hardly a balanced individual himself).
http://archives.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/12/09/lott.comment/
And now Lott and his shoot-from-the-hip commentary are back in the
spotlight.
Lott must have enjoyed defeating Lamar Alexander by a single vote to
become Whip: Alexander and Frist are both from Tennessee, allowing the
Mississippian to finally get his revenge on the Volunteer State.
The fact that Alexander was even in the running for leadership shows
just how desperate Senate Republicans are.
Let alone the fact that Alexander has done absolutely nothing in the
less than four years he has been in Congress, this is a guy who, after
all, lost to Trent Lott - after campaigning for the Whip position for
a whopping 18 months!
Then we have the new Minority Leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell of
Kentucky.
Who is Mitch McConnell?
Exactly.
McConnell is nearly as unaccomplished in the Senate as Lamar
Alexander, but he has been around for 22 years.
All you need to know about McConnell is summed up in this lovely
exposé by the Kentucky Lexington Herald-Leader:
http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/news/special_packages/mcconnell/15763570.htm
McConnell's rise to the top of Congress is testament to the power of
money in modern politics.
He has raised nearly $220 million over his Senate career; he spent the
majority not on his own campaigns but on those of his GOP colleagues,
who have rewarded him with power.
"He's completely dogged in his pursuit of money. That's his great
love, above everything else," said Marshall Whitman, who watched
McConnell as an aide to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and as a Christian
Coalition lobbyist.
A leader in the field of tapping the wealthy for campaign cash,
McConnell also led the opposition against efforts to rein in such
donations through campaign-finance reform.
Yes, McConnell is a blatant political prostitute and had no shame
leading the fight against the McCain-Feingold Campaign Reform Act,
going so far as to personally challenge it in the Supreme Court in
McConnell v. Federal Election Commission.

Thanks to these clowns leading Senate Republicans, the 110th Congress
will certainly be fun to watch.

He is an advocate for more money in campaigns.
