New slammer site to be revealed by summer

The government has today revealed that it will identify the new location for the
replacement for the out of date Magilligan prison later this year.
Security Minister Paul Goggins today said that prison chiefs have been asked to
provide a list of possible site for the new jail before the end of the summer.
The decision to build a new prison came after an inspection revealed that some areas
of the prison were unsafe and unfit for living.
Authorities are also believed to be considering the idea of demolishing the existing
building and rebuilding the new jail on its site.
Commenting on this, Paul Goggins said: "I have asked the Prison Service, in
consultation with other interested parties, to provide me with a comprehensive
Options Appraisal by the end of the summer. This will enable me to take a final
decision on whether to rebuild on the existing site at Magilligan or at another
location in Northern Ireland."
