NEW YORK, July 3 (Reuters) - Incoming U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry
Paulson was awarded an $18.7 million cash bonus for a half year of work
as Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s (GS.N: Quote, Profile, Research) chief
executive, the investment bank said on Monday.
In its quarterly report, Goldman said the compensation committee of its
board of directors on June 29 approved the payment in recognition of
Paulson's "leadership" for the six months ending in May, when profit
doubled to $4.79 billion.
Goldman also agreed to buy, for an undisclosed price, stakes owned by
Paulson and his wife in private investment funds it manages. A
spokesman for the investment bank declined to elaborate on the filing.
"People in that business make an awful lot of money," said Brent
Longnecker, president of Longnecker & Associates in Houston and a
specialist in executive pay.
"Last year has been very active for deals, so my gut feeling is the
award is fair in light of that activity, and the scrutiny that Wall
Street executives get," he continued. "Cash is probably a much cleaner
way to pay in light of the new position he's taking on."

So why would he take on this low-paying secretary job? You can bet big
business will pay him a fortune under the table in exchange for doing
what they want.
