PROBERS ON PIRRO $$ TRAIL
FEDS CALL FOR DA'S FINANCIAL RECORDS
By FREDRIC U. DICKER State Editor
ALBANY -
The explosive federal probe of Republican attorney-general candidate
Jeanine Pirro's efforts to plant a bug in her allegedly cheating
husband's boat has widened to include her personal financial records,
The Post has learned.
More than 100 pages of Pirro's confidential financial documents -
including records revealing all private business involvements she may
have - were subpoenaed Friday night by federal authorities, sources
said.
The hand-delivered subpoena, from the federal grand jury in Manhattan
that is already probing Pirro's publicly admitted efforts to get
former Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik to help bug her husband's
"love boat," was served on the Westchester County Board of Ethics.
The subpoena demanded eight years of Pirro's financial disclosure
statements - from 1998 to 2005 - when she was Westchester County
district attorney, a source familiar with the subpoena said.
It orders Westchester authorities to turn over the records to the
grand jury on Wednesday.
"Seeking the financial records suggests that the feds are looking at
things that go well beyond the 'love boat' issue," said a source
familiar with the investigation.
Federal investigators already have access to Pirro's income tax
returns. But those returns don't necessarily contain the same
information found in the Westchester records, a legal expert told The
Post.
"On your taxes you list your income and you can list your losses. On
the county filings, you have to show what interests you have in
various legal entities, like land or a partnership, even if they don't
produce any income," the expert said.
The subpoena covers the period when Al Pirro came under federal
investigation and his eventual indictment and conviction on income tax
evasion charges, for which he served nearly a year in prison.
It also covers the more recent period when Pirro became increasingly
friendly with Kerik, who, after he left his post as police
commissioner, began building a career as a private security consultant
affiliated with the firm of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, his old boss.
State law requires the financial material to be filed with the county,
but almost all of it is shielded from public disclosure.
Law enforcement authorities, however, can obtain the information with
a subpoena.
Pirro has insisted she did nothing wrong in discussing putting a bug
on her husband's boat.

These are not particularly great times for Republicans.
