New York Times: Bush Ties to R-Rated Films |
The New York Times
June 19, 1999, Section A, Page 15, Column 1
"George W. Bush has served on the board
of Silver Screen, the company that helped finance the
first R-rated movies at Mr. Eisner's Disney--though, to
his credit, M. Bush has so far spared us any
hypocritical sermons on pop culture."

SECTION: A; Pg. 1
LENGTH: 1324 words
HEADLINE: Bush may take heat over R-rated film ties;
Social conservatives could raise questions if governor
seeks presidential nomination
SOURCE: Staff
BYLINE: R.G. RATCLIFFE, Houston Chronicle Austin Bureau
DATELINE: AUSTIN
BODY:
AUSTIN - Gov. George W. Bush's first chore if he runs
for president in 2000 may be to convince Republican
social conservatives to accept his little-known role
in helping finance more than a dozen R-rated movies
for the Walt Disney Co.
Boycotts of Disney by the Southern Baptist Convention
and American Family Association over its adult movies
appear to have had little financial effect on Disney,
but the influence of social and religious conservatives
in the Republican presidential nominating process could
cause trouble for Bush because of his personal ties to
financing Disney movies.
Social conservatives in Texas already are pushing state
government under Bush to sell off more than $ 416 million
in Disney stock currently owned by Texas trust and pension
funds.
Bush was a paid director of Silver Screen Management
Services Inc. from 1983 until he resigned from its
board two months before announcing for governor in November
1993.
Silver Screen, through limited partnerships, raised more
than $ 1 billion to finance Disney movies ranging from
The Little Mermaid to Stakeout, a comedy about undercover
police spying on suspected criminals in a fancy mountain
home. Silver Screen financed 21 R-rated movies; 32 PG and
PG-13 movies; and nine G movies.
-------------------------
"Bush was a paid director of Silver Screen
Management Inc. for about 10 years," according to the
Houston Chronicle, July 9, 1998. "Silver Screen raised
more than $1 billion to finance Disney movies,
including 21 R-rated movies, 32 PG and PG-13 flicks and
9 G-rated films."
The Houston Chronicle, July 23, 1998, said with George
W. Bush as a member of its board of directors, Silver
Screen financed the R rated movies The Color of Money,
Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Good Morning Vietnam,
The Good Mother, Pretty Woman, Ruthless People, Scenes
from a Mall, Shoot to Kill, and Stakeout.
--------------------
(You may know that the movie "Pretty Woman," featuring Julia
Roberts, glorified prostitution and had such a devastating
impact in the inner city.)
