Newsgroup User Questions RE: abuse |
Dear various Newsgroups Readers.
I received this E Mail recently. (see below)
I guess it is in response to a post I made although the author "Martin
Harrison" failed to acknowledge which post or what he disagreed with or
set him off..
I find this type of attack (Personal E Mail) a bit rude. I feel that
The Newsgroups are a place for open and frank dialogue and discussion
and would have been a better forum to voice disagreement or vent ones
feelings.
My convictions are one of A Conservative Republican, Emphasis on
Conservative, and that is the thrust of my scope of appeal in my
Postings.
Any reply or new discussion, disagreement etc. I have regarding posts
that I reply to are aired in the open newsgroups only and never to the
individual.
I was quite surprised when I received this e mail.
Has anyone else received such personal e mail attacks? Is it normal or
commonplace? I guess there are no rules of Protocol to cite. I do
not wish to receive e mail replies to this query.
I notice that Some just hide behind the mask of the internet to be so
bold in individual attacks, using bad language, insults etc. even
within the newsgroups forum.
The great unwashed have become the great unscathed!
HERE IS THE PERSONAL E MAIL I RECEIVED. (sorry for shouting)

If you want to post to newsgroups and don't want to receive e-mail replies
to your posts, simply delete your correct e-mail address from your posts.
At the very least, put something on your e-mail address that would defeat
the e-mail harvesters that the spammers use on these NG's. Since I don't
have much of a problem with morons sending me bad e-mails, I simply added
spamsucks to the end of my e-mail address. If it gets bad, I'll use an
invalid e-mail address.
Now about being a conservative Republican, that can be treated now you know
:-)

You have to take the good with the bad, and the email in question was
certainly beyond bad.
It wasn't personal though - more probably, some automated daemon
extracted your email address from somewhere and just spammed it.
Personally, I have two levels of email spam filters, that, together,
work pretty well. But, you can also get mail clients that have 'white
lists' and 'black lists' so you can control who you get email from.
I have also noticed, that since the FBI got legal clearance under the
Patriot Act to start reading news groups, that certain threatening or
attempts to form or advocate violence have disappeared.
It's a form of censorship that I disagree with. More specifically, I'd
just as soon have those groups/people publish freely - and have the FBI
go attend their meetings and such - but under the current system,
they've just moved underground and are now harder to detect.

You are not alone. Make sure you are running a good AntiVirus program
and a firewall too. Some internet vandals you may encounter in these
groups like to launch attacks against your computer too.
