Nigeria Investigates US's Halliburton
(NNPA) -
Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has ordered an investigation into
reports that the U.S. firm Halliburton paid $180 million in bribes to
get a natural gas project in the 1990s in Nigeria.
"Investigations have already begun, and the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission is the arrowhead of that," said senior presidential
advisor Oluremi Oyo.
"The President has said that no stone would be left unturned to get to
the bottom of this."
The U.S. Justice Department is reported to be conducting its own
investigation into the alleged bribe.
Another U.S. investigation is examining claims that Halliburton
overcharged parties rebuilding Iraq by $61 million for supplying
gasoline from Kuwait.
This week, Kuwaiti politicians have also called for their country to
launch its own probe.
***** Cheney was head of Halliburton from 1995 to 2000, when he left to
become George Bush's vice president.
Obasanjo's announcement, part of his anti-corruption drive, comes just
days after he set up a committee to look into the radioactive
materials stolen from a Nigerian unit of Halliburton Energy Services.
