No apologies from Slick Willie Frist or Jebby Bush after Schiavo autopsy results |

No apologies after autopsy results
BY RICH POLIKOFF
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist enjoys people taking notice of the
fact that he is a Harvard-educated doctor.
No doubt Harvard can expect a flood of applications, because its
graduates have almost superhuman powers.
When justifying the unprecedented intrusion of Congress and the
President in the Terri Schiavo case in March, Frist cast doubt on her
doctors’ claims that Schiavo was essentially brain-dead.
Said Frist at the time, "She certainly seems to respond to visual
stimuli."
Frist prefaced his remarks by stating he was speaking "more as a
physician than as a United States senator."
And what a physician he must be.
Frist didn’t need to examine Schiavo in person before making his
diagnosis;
he simply reviewed tapes of her.
That’s some medical skill.
Perhaps for his next trick, Frist can detect high cholesterol over the
phone.
Actually, Frist -- who was formerly a heart surgeon, not a neurologist
-- would likely have better luck with that than he did with Schiavo,
whose recent autopsy revealed she was blind.
No wonder Frist was criticized by 31 of his Harvard classmates, who
wrote him a letter saying he had used his degree improperly.
After the autopsy’s release, Frist finally admitted that Schiavo had
suffered "totally irreversible brain damage."
Of course, he refused to apologize for any of his earlier remarks, nor
did he even back down on the subject.
Incredibly, he added to the misinformation surrounding the whole
sordid ordeal by stating, "I did say that certain tests should be
performed to determine (Schiavo’s condition) before starving her to
death."
In reality, Schiavo was not starved to death, but died of dehydration.
But why let a little thing like the facts -- or the objections of a
majority of Americans to Washington’s meddling -- get in the way of
appeasing your base.
Florida Gov. Jeb Bush certainly has no problem keeping the issue in
the news.
After the release of Schiavo’s autopsy, Bush requested an
investigation into the 911 call placed by Schiavo’s husband, Michael,
on the night she suffered the heart attack that caused her to plunge
into her unalterable state.
Bush wants an explanation for why Terri Schiavo collapsed, and for an
alleged time delay that occurred before Michael called 911.
According to Bush, "Between 40 and 70 minutes elapsed (after Schiavo’s
collapse) before the call was made, and I am aware of no explanation
for the delay."
But Bush does know something about delays.
Terri Schiavo collapsed Feb. 25, 1990, giving Bush and his three
predecessors more than 15 years to request an investigation.
Pushing for an inquiry wouldn’t have been very beneficial to a
politician 15 years ago, though.
Back then, Terry Schiavo was an obscure woman whose brain was rotting
away; at the time of her death, it had shrunk to half the normal size
for a person her age.
Fifteen years later, however, Schiavo became useful to powerful
Republicans considering a presidential bid -- as both Frist and Jeb
Bush may be doing.
With Vice President ***** Cheney vowing not to run, Frist has long been
rumored to be one of the seemingly countless Republicans interested in
running in 2008.
Bush, meanwhile, has said he does not plan to follow in his older
brother’s footsteps and run in 2008, even though his father, former
President George H.W. Bush, appeared to lay the groundwork in a recent
interview for a Jeb run in ’08.
There’s also the possibility, explored by the Washington Post last
week, that Gov. Bush might run in 2008 as a vice-presidential
candidate with Sen. John McCain.
In that scenario, Bush would bring the support of the
ultra-conservatives that McCain will struggle to attract.
Frist, on the other hand, wouldn’t need Bush’s help to secure that
group’s support.
He can do fine with them on his own, thanks in part to how he acted
during Schiavo’s final weeks.
That’s what this whole thing was about.
It wasn’t about "erring on the side of life," as the president said
after speeding back to Washington to sign Schiavo legislation.
(For those keeping track, Bush was not so compassionate toward the
mentally impaired as governor of Texas in 1997, when he permitted the
execution of 33-year-old Terry Washington, a mentally-retarded man
with the faculties of a 7-year-old.)
What Frist did was not about what was best for Terri Schiavo, nor is
Gov. Bush suddenly concerned with what happened in 1990.
It’s about catering to the radical elements in the Republican Party.
Sadly, after spending more than 15 years in a kind of hell none of us
can fathom, Terri Schiavo is being used as a political tool.
Will she ever be allowed to rest in peace?

Indeed, as it also proves the moon is made of green cheese, we've been
invaded by three-headed aliens, that up is sometimes down, and freedom is
slavery. Not to mention war is peace.
