No Concealed Weapons on S.C. Campuses
By Associated Press
COLUMBIA, S.C. --
An attempt to put more guns on school campuses as a way to prevent
violence like the Virginia Tech massacre was defeated by state
lawmakers on Wednesday.
The proposal would have allowed concealed weapon permit holders to
bring guns to public school campuses, from elementary schools to
universities, if they were left in vehicles.
"This bill had nothing to do with children carrying firearms to
school, or college students having firearms in their backpacks, or
teachers carrying Colt .45s on their hip," said chief sponsor Rep.
Jeff Duncan, R-Clinton.
"The intent of this legislation is to give honest, law-abiding
citizens access to a personal protection firearm if needed."
The House sent the proposal back to committee, defeating it with just
one day left before legislators are scheduled to adjourn until early
next year.
Opponents feared more guns could to more accidental shootings or
invite violence.

"I believe everyody in the world should have guns. Citizens should
have bazookas and rocket launchers too. I believe that all citizens
should have their weapons of choice. However, I also believe that only
I should have the ammunition. Because frankly, I wouldn't trust the
rest of the goobers with anything more dangerous than string."
