Well, the opponents of religion in school have a new success of sorts,
only I'm sure it it not the success they want. According to the New
York Times, a study that comes out on the 28th will show that schools
all over the nation have cut study times of history and science and art
and more. Why? No child left behind.
I know that liberals have had a problem with this policy for some time,
and I am among them. I just didn't speak up about it, till now.
Due to the no child left behind standardized tests, Math and English
are being focused on by the schools, since they are the subjects being
tested. Schools have cut study time from the other subjects to focus
on these two, in order to ensure their schools pass the test.
This is so sad.
It may have been known in these groups that I have been homeschooling
my daughter. What I didn't let on was that this ended this year, and
my daughter has been excelling in the school system (an A
student...showing I prepared her well). That being said, I can confirm
this is going on where I live. The students study English and Math at
least once a day, sometimes twice a day. Subjects like Science and
History have, to my own frustration, been taught once a week or so.
Now, since I have a history college background, my main frustration was
at the lack of history courses (how can we learn from the past if we
never hear it), but I'm guessing the science lack will have a greater
impact on these groups.
If we don't learn about each other's background (and that includes
religious), how will we ever learn to work together. To paraphrase Mr
Hollands Opus, we will have nothing to read and write about.
Who else can attest to this major flaw in the education system?

If you are a parent as I am, you learn to supplement your child's education.
Regardless of what my kids are taught, I would be doing this. Every day
should be an education for a child. My first child was reading before she
was 4. She also understands some spanish and japanese, reads at a high
school level (she's in 3rd grade), and is learning to play the flute. She's
read all the Harry Potter books and her favorite thing to do is to take her
Audobon book and her Arizona Wildlife Identifier with her on trips so she
can identify birds, animals, and flowers. All of this education she got from
us. No school, no matter how thorough, could be able to do this. Our
youngest is, education wise, ready for first grade, though her social skills
may not be ready. She likes different things than her sister so we will
cater her supplemental learning to these needs. And again, no school can do
this, no matter how much money you pay.
The major flaw in the education system today is in trying to please
everyone. I think conservatives are partially correct when they complain
about our history being dumbed down to accomodate everyone who has a beef
with our history. I'm not a deconstructionist, so I believe history should
be taught in context of the times it occured which fosters critical
thinking, not in context of our times and politics which squelches critical
thinking. So blame the liberals for mucking up history. Conservatives,
however, are guilty of destroying science education in this country in their
quest to indoctrinate children with their religious beliefs and destroy
Darwinian theory. If science is being short sheeted, thank the religious
fanatics who can't have science and reality conflict with their religion.
Constant threats of lawsuits and costly impeachment drives against board
members have caused some schools to avoid teaching science when it might
conflict with someone's beliefs, and that is outright wrong.
So the answer is the same answer as it has been for hundreds of years.
Parents are responsible for the education of their children, and effort
should be put more into what to teach your child at home than interfering
with other children's education to satisfy your own political and religious
agenda. If we just allowed teachers to teach, we wouldn't have a problem.
