who now runs one of America's leading scientific research institutions,
drew widespread condemnation for comments he made ahead of his arrival in
Britain today for a speaking tour at venues including the Science Museum
in London.
The 79-year-old geneticist reopened the explosive debate about race and
science in a newspaper interview in which he said Western policies
towards African countries were wrongly based on an assumption that black
people were as clever as their white counterparts when "testing"
suggested the contrary. He claimed genes responsible for creating
differences in human intelligence could be found within a decade.
His views are also reflected in a book published next week, in which he

Yes, I'm eager to discuss the political ramifications of differentiating
entire classes of people based upon intellectual limitations.
It has been (scientifically) shown that Republicans (conservatives) are
incurious and mentally lazy. Should mentally-lazy easily-indoctrinated
(read: stupid) Republicans be allowed to hold public office, or to own
property?
Yes, perhaps it is high time to make sure that our nation's future isn't
subverted by the stupid, the easily fooled, the mentally lazy, the bigoted
and the insane. First step: Ban all conservative parties.

He's accurate about that. Further, certain races tend to dominate

A point, yes, but not that "great" of a point. I think it is way too much of
an overstatement to qualify that "all humans are descended form Black
Africans".
It is generally accepted that all humans eminated from Africa, yes, but I
don't think it is accurate to imply they were "Black Africans" yet at the
time. Black peoples are the result of evolutionary changes over long periods
of time just as are White, Yellow, and Red. It's not likely the earliest
humans were recognizable as a particular modern race.
Show me otherwise and I'll read it with an open mind.

I do recall some kind of half-assed study a year or
so back suggesting that 'conservatives' are slightly
more likely to vote "emotionally" on certain kinds
of issues. Alas, I think the survey was flawed in
the palette of issues offered - ones more likely
to *****-off 'conservatives' than 'liberals'. So far
as I can tell, "liberals" are just as likely to
substitute emotion for facts when the issues hit
THEIR 'hot buttons'.
Another study, Harvard Med I think, used magnetoencephography
to reveal that everyone, even supposedly 'logical' people, use
a LOT of "emotional reasoning" even when analyzing relatively
neutral problems and issues. Probably has something to do with
so many of our 'basic truths' being ultimately subjective. We've
just gotta wing it.

I do recall some kind of half-assed study a year or
so back suggesting that 'conservatives' are slightly
more likely to vote "emotionally" on certain kinds
of issues. Alas, I think the survey was flawed in
the palette of issues offered - ones more likely
to *****-off 'conservatives' than 'liberals'. So far
as I can tell, "liberals" are just as likely to
substitute emotion for facts when the issues hit
THEIR 'hot buttons'.

Another study, Harvard Med I think, used magnetoencephography
to reveal that everyone, even supposedly 'logical' people, use
a LOT of "emotional reasoning" even when analyzing relatively
neutral problems and issues. Probably has something to do with
so many of our 'basic truths' being ultimately subjective. We've
just gotta wing it.
It only makes sense. Logic and emotional reasoning had to evolve side by
side....

I think insecure men (probably short and bald) began emphasizing the
differences because they are most prominent in men versus women.
But as we've learned they aren't so much differences as they are changes in
procedural thought.
But any time you get a bunch of slavering dykes yelling at a group of short
bald men you're gonna have trouble...

Cultural/environmental factors. Those kinds of
persuits must be viewed as "laudable" by the
community. A physicist needs to get automatic
respect - as must physics students. In the USA
at least, this is rarely the case. The most
common social environment - parents, peers,
neighbors - a 'black' child is raised in
generally finds other goals far more worthy.
Something like physics and chemistry ... they
may even be viewed as worse than 'nerdish',
as "sucking-up-to-The-Man" - tantamount to
"race treason".
One or two contrary voices in a community
aren't likely to alter the overall "message"
about the unworthiness of intellectual persuits.
In the USA, those children raised in 'asian' and
Jewish communities get the exact opposite message
from every direction day in and day out. For them
the message is that if you're NOT a doctor, scientist,
banker, politician, author, artist or intellectual THAT
makes you a sort of "traitor" - a failure, a disgrace.
Guess which kids are most likely to excel in the
sciences these days ?
Actually, this push for "higher" occupations is
common amongst many immigrant groups - first and
second generation especially. They feel they have
to "make it", get established, get respect, become
integral to the system. It's a path to political
significance and wealth - "safety" in a strange
land.
Long-established groups, well, they tend to mellow
and slack off.
American 'blacks' in particular were systematically
deprived for centuries - dragged to the bottom of
the ladder and KEPT there by force if necessary.
They were not allowed to "integrate", discouraged
from participating and kept as ignorant as possible
so they wouldn't get "uppity".
Well, if you can't get much "stuff" ... anyone WITH
"stuff" tends to get respect. The persuit of material
posessions, the flashier the better, seems to be one
of the long-term effects of what was done to American
'blacks'. If you can't get "stuff" you can also persue
STATUS within the community. There have been two main
ways poor 'blacks' earned status besides being 'rich'.
They could become preachers, or "strong men" (often
meaning 'thugs'). Fear evokes something akin to
"respect" - so be feared. It's relatively easy.
"Higher" persuits ... any thought of them having
value perished LONG ago.
Of course I'm speaking in generalities. Strong, focused
parents CAN instill respect for "higher" persuits in
their children. It's done all the time - just not on
a broad enough scale to induce 'black' culture to
change priorities. Not yet anyway.
However, the 'black' middle class IS getting larger
of late. Their children will be businessmen and
lawyers, doctors and scientists. I don't know if
their attitude can filter ALL the way down to the
most dismal ghettos, but their message WILL get
further than anything "The Man" preaches. Things
will improve for American 'blacks'. The ghettos
will get smaller and with them the "ghetto
mentality".
Meanwhile, for American 'whites', "laudable" is
increasingly associated with flashy consumer
goods and jocks get far more respect and money
than scientists. Could be, in 100 years or so,
those ghettos will have a very 'pale' look and
someone will ask "Why don't WHITE kids do well
in the hard sciences ? They must have inferior
intelligence !" :-)

I just thought I'd point out that this controversy was "created" well before
The Bell Curve in the 1990's. While it arguably has been in existence for
centuries, the first modern day scientist to raise this spectre was Arthur
Jensen in 1969 when he published an article in the Harvard Educational
Review, titled "How Much Can We Boost I.Q. and Scholastic Achievement?" in
which he concluded that it is"a not unreasonable hypothesis that genetic
factors are strongly implicated in the average Negro-white intelligence
difference". He later attempted to further clarify and objectify this
statement. His conclusions stirred quite a controversy at the time.
I need to add that my participation in this thread in no way is meant to
imply that I personally subscribe to nor advocate these ideas. I simply
thought that this one mis-statement (as I saw it) was worthy of addressing.
