What if we could silently make an impact on Inaugeration Day that would gain
the attention of politicians, corporations, and the media (is that
redundant?)? I am planning to participate in this creative idea, and hope
you will, too. If you think it's a good one, pass it on. Let's see what we
can do by NOT doing, for a change.
Inauguration Day, Silent Protest
Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in Iraq,
since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to oppose it,
Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is "Not One Damn Dime Day"
in America.
On "Not One Damn Dime Day," those who oppose what is happening in our name
in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of
consumer spending.
During "Not One Damn Dime Day" please don't spend money. Not one damn dime
for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse purchases.
Not one damn dime for anything for 24 hours.
On "Not One Damn Dime Day," please boycott Walmart, KMart and Target. Please
don't go to the mall or the local convenience store. Please don't buy any
fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter).
For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down. The
object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in Iraq is immoral
and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and that it is their
responsibility to stop it.
"Not One Damn Dime Day" is to remind them, too, that they work for the
people of the United States of America, not for the international
corporations and K Street lobbyists who represent the corporations and
funnel cash into American politics.
"Not One Damn Dime Day" is about supporting the troops. The politicians put
the troops in harm's way. Now 1,200 brave young Americans and (some
estimate) 100,000 Iraqis have died. The politicians owe our troops a plan --
a way to come home.
There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing agenda
to rant about. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" you take action by doing nothing.
You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed. For 24 hours, nothing

Excellent idea, I live on the wrong coast. I'd probably be there otherwise.
I heard that there will be tons of people with their backs turned on the
motorcade route.

Getting through to the mainstream media about the J20 general strike
and Bush inauguration protest is essential. "Not one damn dime day"
seems to be breaking through already but we can and should do more.
Find allies and true journalists in the mainstream corporate media and
continue to forward messages to them in newer, less conventional ways.
If the mainstream press ignores this movement everyone will know it
because we are successfully spreading the word via the web, email, and
through a variety of (relatively) mainstream progressive media outlets.
This time around any lack of coverage will be glaring because we are
building so many alternative information networks (that are spreading
the j20 general strike/protest message) in an historically
unprecedented manner. Even through word of mouth (over talk radio) we
can literally call Bush's "mandate" into question if enough people are
ready to stand up, speak out, and strike -- and many obviously are.
The viral idea may be coming into it's own. Cut, paste, forward, and
repeat the best of everyone's ideas with minimal effort and everyone
can make a difference. Just the volume of protest information will be a
story and then the protest will be too.
In closing, more time-tested cliches may be in order...
If not now, when?
If not you, who?

Independent Media Converges to Cover Bush Inauguration
We are contacting you as an important member of the independent
media community to ask you to participate in, support or promote
independent media coverage of the upcoming presidential inauguration
in January.
From Jan. 10 through Jan. 24, independent media makers will converge
in the nation's capital to provide continuous coverage of the
inauguration through video, photography, radio, print, and web
postings.
We are a group of independent media makers in Washington, DC that
has formed to help facilitate and coordinate coverage of the
inauguration.
For more information, please visit our website at
www.inaugurationmedia.org. A list of our needs follows at the end
of this letter, along with information on how to join out listserves.
Information about specific media projects during the inauguration
will be available on our website in the coming weeks.
If you are in the DC area or coming to town for the inauguration,
we ask you to contact us to help coordinate independent media
coverage.
We intend to provide a media workspace with broadband Internet
access, telephones, a limited number of computers for public use
and Internet radio facilities. Although we will appreciate and
request donations for use of the space, no one who legitimately
wants to use the space to create independent media will be turned
away.
If you cannot come to Washington for the inauguration, please help
promote and distribute the independent media that is produced. For
example, post a link to our website on your site.
Repost or re-air content produced during the inauguration. Use
whatever forum you have to discuss and promote the independent media
produced during the inauguration. Share this letter and the existence
of our media center with your readership, listenership, viewership,
fellow journalists, photographers, filmmakers, and writers. Also,
consider sponsoring a trip to Washington for someone else who wishes
to create media.
Finally, we ask everyone to review the list of needs at the end of
this letter and help us however you can.
This year's election was won by a razor thin margin.
Indeed, almost half of those who voted did not vote for Bush. The
same was true of the last election. Despite this, the mainstream
media provided almost no coverage of the protests and general dissent
surrounding the 2000 inauguration. We do not want this situation
to occur again, and we are determined to use our voices and the
voices of others around the world to ensure that independent messages
are heard.
The success of delivering these messages depends upon how much unity
we can create in the world of independent media. One person acting
alone is one voice. Acting together, we are many voices, and can
pool our resources to rise above the din of the mainstream media.
With your assistance, we can ensure that the voice of independent
media is heard loud and clear.

Depending on the number of participants in your city, two or more
flashmobs could descend on various locations and then converge with
the main counter-inaugural protest (before moving elsewhere).
Esso/Exxon/Mobil provides an internationally unifying group of
landmarks and could provide a clear link between Bush, corporations,
oil, war, and the system in general.
Flashmobs could be a great way to rally the troops. It may not be
easy but it's also not to late (and might be fun) -- so get busy,
get active, get revolting!

Inauguration Day, Silent Protest
Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in
Iraq,
since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to oppose
it,
Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is "Not One Damn Dime
Day"
in America.
On "Not One Damn Dime Day," those who oppose what is happening in our
name
in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of
consumer spending.
During "Not One Damn Dime Day" please don't spend money. Not one damn
dime
for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse
purchases.
Not one damn dime for anything for 24 hours.
On "Not One Damn Dime Day," please boycott Walmart, KMart and Target.
Please
don't go to the mall or the local convenience store. Please don't buy
any
fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter).
For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down.
The
object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in Iraq is
immoral
and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and that it is
their
responsibility to stop it.
"Not One Damn Dime Day" is to remind them, too, that they work for
the
people of the United States of America, not for the international
corporations and K Street lobbyists who represent the corporations
and
funnel cash into American politics.
"Not One Damn Dime Day" is about supporting the troops. The
politicians put
the troops in harm's way. Now 1,200 brave young Americans and (some
estimate) 100,000 Iraqis have died. The politicians owe our troops a
plan --
a way to come home.
There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing
agenda
to rant about. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" you take action by doing
nothing.
You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed. For 24 hours,
nothing
gets spent, not one damn dime, to remind our religious leaders and
our
politicians of their moral responsibility to end the war in Iraq and
give
America back to the people
PLEASE PASS ON
The absence of questions does not make a democracy function;
democratic
processes do. It has been a long time since this country has paid a
price
for liberty. It seems clear now that a large payment of vigilance is
long
overdue.
