Now Hear This: Don't Hear This

Linda Laroca had a nice new job with nice surroundings and a nice
boss.
One day the boss wanted to meet Linda in a Vista shopping center on
her day off.
They would take care of some company chore.
That's where the boss espied Linda's bumper sticker: AIR AMERICA
RADIO, 1360 PROGRESSIVE TALK.
According to the North County Times, Laroca's boss was aghast.
She suggested Linda might be a part of al-Qaeda, then she fired her.
All for showing a preference for the wrong talk show station.
Ah, talk radio!
It has the ability to enhance (some say abuse) free speech.
I first got acquainted with it in 1966.
Appropriately enough it was at the national seat of power, Washington
D.C.
I had just returned stateside for a tour of duty at the National
Security Agency.
I was hooked and I loved it.
A call to Jamie Bragg or Warner Wolf would evoke a comment from one of
my fellow spooks the next day:
"Hey, I heard you on WTOP last night."
Although some didn't agree with my expressed opinions, it never, ever,
affected our friendship or ability to work together.
Furthermore we learned from each other.
Things like that happen when people are willing to consider another's
point of view.
Then in the 1970s I retired from the Navy and downloaded to San Diego.
I often called Ken Kramer, Lawrence Gross, and a guy named Elwell.
Conservatives called liberal hosts and liberals called conservative
hosts.
When Hedgecock hooked up with KOGO I called him now and then.
Then the worm turned.
Lines are drawn.
I blame most of it on Rush Limbaugh when he went national in 1988 and
filled the air with bombast.
LIMBAWWW seldom takes a call from a liberal, then only when he's
convinced he has one he can pummel mercilessly.
Diversity bit the dust.
Locally KOGO led the way with national hosts Rush and Dr. Laura, plus
locals Roger and, later on, Mark Larson.
By 2003 KFMB had joined the fray.
The two stations acted as if they were in a race with to see who could
be the most jingoistic.
KFMB sported local Rick Roberts as well as Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity
and Mike Savage.
Ted Leitner, a pain sometimes, but a liberal pain, disappeared.
All the others were spouting their twin heroes, George Bush and Jesus
Christ.
Anything else wasn't worthy!
I was starting to wonder if anybody else in town agreed with me.
Opposition was stifled.
Agreement, even the silliest, was and is accepted without question.
Indeed, the host often topped it in silliness.
Take last week, a proper sycophant called KOGO.
She took advantage of the opportunity to make an idiot of herself by
following the approved line of whining about sending Cindy Sheehan to
Iraq.
Roger replied, "Cindy hates America. She has always been a left wing
activist."
So there you have it.
Franklin Roosevelt and I are left wingers.
Ergo we hate America.
Saves a lot of time if you don't bother explaining -- or thinking!
Does this really matter?
Is it all marketplace economics and we are looking at the essence of a
free enterprise?
Possibly, but with so much at stake, shouldn't there be an attempt to
be fair?
How about the truth?
You can't get truth when you're doggedly one-sided.
In 2003 I wrote a letter to KFMB asking for something approaching
balance.
No answer.
Then, last year, I called their program director, Dave Sniff.
I knew Dave from the old Hudson & Bauer show where I once made daily
calls as Dipsey Dumpster.
"Hey Dave give us a break out here. We get these jingoists all day
long. How about a liberal somewhere in there?"
Dave patiently explained that nobody wanted to hear liberals.
Wonder what Will Rogers would have had to say about that?
Now the beleaguered left is getting a reprieve and it looks as if it
might stick.
KLSD, 1360 on the dial, holds sway about all day long with left wing
folks.
Their day starts with an old grad of KSDO, KOGO, and KFMB -- Stacy
Taylor.
Stacy and his sidekick, "Scooter" are kicking ***** from the other end
of the dial and the other side of the political forum.
They are obviously hitting some nerves of those who simply can't stand
a dissenting opinion anywhere.
Just ask Linda Laroca.
