N.Y. GOP Drops Dead
New York's Republican Party is by all appearances committing ritual
suicide this year -- the natural consequence of a state GOP that long
ago lost its soul.
The New York Daily News famously scolded a Republican president who
wouldn't bail the city out of its own financial irresponsibility with
the headline:
"Ford to New York: Drop Dead."
But it's the state's own Republican Party that always lets New Yorkers
down.
The latest troubles surround Jeanine Pirro, the tough-talking former
Westchester County district attorney running against Andrew Cuomo
(Mario's son) for state attorney general.
Pirro is under federal investigation after a wiretap found her asking
ex-NYC police chief Bernard Kerik to bug her husband to see if he was
cheating on her.
President Bush wanted Kerik as Homeland Security chief in 2004, but he
dropped out over ethics issues.
On paper, Pirro was once New York's Great Right Hope: an articulate,
crime-fighting ethnic woman who could take on liberal Democrats.
But her disastrous campaign to unseat Sen. Hillary Clinton ended as
soon as it began:
Democrats made a campaign commercial from her announcement, in which
she misplaced a page from her prepared remarks and was speechless for
what seemed like forever.
Her husband, a prominent political fundraiser jailed for 11 months for
tax fraud who fathered an illegitimate child early in their marriage,
hurt her chances, too.
And in March, Pirro said she visited the "west end of New York,
bordering on Ohio."
The only problem is, Ohio doesn't border New York state.
Meanwhile, the Republican now running against Hillary, John Spencer,
has his own sex scandal:
He fathered his unmarried chief of staff's two children while he was
mayor of Yonkers.
And even when a viable candidate more in line with the national party
comes along -- such as former state lawmaker John Faso -- he's sent up
to run for governor against someone no one can beat.
Polls show the aggressively anti-business state attorney general Eliot
Spitzer with an historic 4-to-1 edge over Faso.
