Markers erected in honor of fallen soldiers damaged

Larry Coleman was supposed to be working yesterday morning.
Instead, the University of Toledo professor helped reset 1,800 to
1,900 white wooden tombstones, each representing a U.S. soldier who
died in Iraq or Afghanistan, that were vandalized overnight at the UT
campus.
"We think the people who knocked these down are dishonoring these
people’s lives," said Mr. Coleman, a member of the Northwest Ohio
Peace Coalition.
"I don’t want to think it was done maliciously, but I suspect it was."
About 30 coalition members and other organizers of the "Arlington
Midwest" and "Bring Them Home Now" bus tour -- held last night and
today at the university -- erected the 2,000-piece display Wednesday
in grassy areas near University Hall and Memorial Field House.
The display honors the soldiers and reminds the public of the cost of
war, said Mike Ferner, an anti-war activist, Veterans for Peace
member, and former Toledo councilman.
He said organizers experienced no problems when the display was
erected at the university and at Lourdes College earlier this year.
Display organizers spent at least three hours setting up the rows of
markers before leaving about 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Less than 12 hours later, a few returned to find the majority of their
work lying on the ground.
"It’s just a sorry sight to see something that’s pretty sacred because
of what it memorializes just strewn all over the ground," Mr. Ferner
said.
"I’d say from the looks of it, it was pretty intentional and not just
drunken kids. Somebody was very intent on what they were doing."
A few of the markers -- which bear a soldier’s name, rank, age, state,
and when and where they died -- were broken in half.
Others were separated from the metal rods that held them in the
ground.
An expletive was written on a lamp post, but it was unclear if it was
part of the vandalism.
Pat Gorman, a freshman journalism student who didn’t help set up the
display, was one of the first to notice the vandalism before his 8
a.m. class.
"I said, ‘Oh boy. This is really disgusting,’" the 39-year-old
Toledoan said as he uprighted some of the boards.
Campus police do not know who committed the crime or why.
They are investigating but have little to go on.
There were no witnesses, suspects, or surveillance cameras in the
area, Sgt. Paul Csurgo said.
Police plan to keep an extra eye on the display area and check with
officers who worked when the crime occurred.
University President Dan Johnson sent a letter to the campus
community, saying he was "personally saddened" to learn of the
vandalism and that such behavior will not be tolerated.
"A college campus is a place to exchange ideas in a positive and
productive manner; and regardless of your opinion of the content or
intentions of the display, this deplorable act of vandalism strikes
directly at one of our institution’s core values: freedom of
expression," he said.
Mr. Johnson said the UT Department of Women’s and Gender studies and
display organizers followed appropriate university policy and protocol
in gaining permission for the display.
"It is inexcusable that anyone would attempt to silence their voice in
this way," he said.
Mr. Johnson chatted with organizers setting up the display on his way
to his car Wednesday night.
He said they might want to have somebody spend the night there, said
Tobin Klinger, a university spokesman.
But organizers said the university did not permit them to stay
overnight.
Campus police Chief John Dauer said he was aware of the display, but
said neither he nor his staff told organizers they couldn’t spend the
night.
Organizers planned to stay last night, when presentations from
military families and veterans on the effects of war were to be given
and a candlelight vigil was to be held.
The display will continue through today.
Another forum and presentations will be held at noon.

But those soldiers dishonored the lives of others first. Those soldiers
were not honorable. They were *****.
"I don't want to think it was done maliciously, but I suspect it was."
It was done because any monument to those soldiers is a mockery of justice.
They could have done the right thing and refused to go but no they prefered
killing innocent people for the fun of it. I hope the markers were pissed
on before they were knocked down.

Cool! I guess somebody expressed their contempt for the cold blooded
murdereres represented by the markers.

What more can you expect from anti-American leftist liberals. They

I suppose the liberal loon slacker will still be paid for not doing his job
this fine day.
Liberals wouldn't know productivity if they fell in a bucket of it.
They are the waster class.

Liberals ERECTED them. Liberals are the ones who DON'T want the war.
Since America's reputation is in the shitter at the hands of the
Republicans, I guess you are WRONG about who hates America.
God, you're stupid.

The truth will make you a better citizen. Liberals through out the
nation are becoming more conservative and consequently better citizens
as they hear the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth from
their republican benefactors.

What tranquilizer are you on? I have never seen so many angry people in my

It's hardly meaningless, since hate is the only motivation
for such vandalism.
