OOPS, little Chuckie Schumer fibs |
The mother of all Freudian slips
Les Enfants Terrible points out a little noticed slip of the tongue of
Senator Schumer.
Political Yen/Yang is thinking the same thing that I am after listening to
Senator's Schumer and Leahy respond to the Roberts nomination. I thought it
was Leahy, but Yen-Yang attributes the following quote to Schumer:
"Now that he is nominated for a position where he can overturn precedent
and make law, it is even more important that he fully answers a very broad
range of questions,"
Surprisingly, the blogosphere seems to have missed this significant
statement. The quote is instructive not only to the understanding that
liberals have about the role of the Supreme Court, but also to their
intention with the Supreme Court. (Emphasis mine.)
Did Schumer just reveal the innermost desires of the left? I know there's
some pretty dumb Senators, but I don't think Schumer is one of those -
conniving, yes, but dumb? Or is the liberal ideology so ingrained that
having justices who make law is simply assumed?
In any case, I don't think the story will go very far. Too many people will
complain of the parsing of words. My personal take is that Schumer simply
spoke what he believed in an unguarded moment.
